In recent years, several automated analysers that prepare and stain blood smears have been introduced in clinical laboratories. Despite the use of instrumental settings based on physical characteristic of individual samples, traumatic injuries of neutrophil and lymphocytes can be observed. Some samples present a very high percentage of damaged cells, allowing the speculation that a cellular susceptibility may enhance mechanical traumatism. These artefacts can puzzle morphological evaluation in both traditional and digitised microscopy; in addition, unskilled operators can be misled.

Background: Stepped-wedge cluster trials (SW-CTs) describe a cluster trial design where treatment rollout is staggered over the course of the trial. Clusters are commonly randomized to receive treatment beginning at different time points in this study design (commonly referred to as a Stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial; SW-CRT), but they can also be non-randomized. Trials with this design regularly have a low number of clusters and can be vulnerable to covariate imbalance.

Cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) combined with sub-tomogram averaging (STA) allows the determination of protein structures imaged within the native context of the cell at near-atomic resolution. Particle picking is an essential step in the cryo-ET/STA image analysis pipeline that consists in locating the position of proteins within crowded cellular tomograms so that they can be aligned and averaged in 3D to improve resolution. While extensive work in 2D particle picking has been done in the context of single-particle cryo-EM, comparatively fewer strategies have been proposed to pick particles from 3D tomograms, in part due to the challenges associated with working with noisy 3D volumes affected by the missing wedge.

To evaluate the feasibility of acquiring vertebral height from chest low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) images using an artificial intelligence (AI) system based on 3D U-Net vertebral segmentation technology and the correlation and features of vertebral morphology with sex and age of the Chinese population. Patients who underwent chest LDCT between September 2020 and April 2023 were enrolled. The Altman and Pearson's correlation analyses were used to compare the correlation and consistency between the AI software and manual measurement of vertebral height.
