We investigated the geometric and chemical factors of nonspherical Janus particles (i.e., Janus ellipsoids) with regard to the pinning and unpinning behaviors of the Janus boundary at the oil-water interface using attachment energy numerical calculations. The geometric factors were characterized by aspect ratio () and location of the Janus boundary () separating the polar and apolar regions of the particle. The chemical factor indicated the supplementary wettability () of the two sides of the particle with identical deviations of apolarity and polarity from neutral wetting. These two factors competed with each other to determine particle configurations at the interface. In general, the critical value of () required to preserve the pinned configuration was inversely proportional to the values of and . From the numerical calculations, the empirical relationship of the parameter values of Janus ellipsoids was found; that is, λ = Δ β c / Δ α ≈ 0.61 A R - 1.61 . Particularly for the Janus ellipsoids with > 1, the value is consistent with the boundary between the tilted only and the tilted equilibrium/upright metastable region in their configuration phase diagram. We believe that this work performed at the single particle level offers a fundamental understanding of the manipulation of interparticle interactions and control of the rheological properties of particle-laden interfaces when particles are used as solid surfactants.

The objective of this article is to investigate how the electric polarizability manifests on the propulsion and collective dynamics of metallodielectric Janus particles by comparing the velocity spectra under rotating and nonrotating AC fields. Janus particles were fabricated by depositing sequential layers of titanium and SiO on spherical cores. Model systems of known polarizability were created by varying the thickness of titanium or by adjusting the concentration of electrolyte.

From studies molecular dynamics simulations, we report results on structure and dynamics in mixtures of active colloids and passive polymers that are confined inside a spherical container with a repulsive boundary. All interactions in the fully passive limit are chosen in such a way that in equilibrium coexistence between colloid-rich and polymer-rich phases occurs. For most part of the studies the chosen compositions give rise to Janus-like structure: nearly one side of the sphere is occupied by the colloids and the rest by the polymers.

A theoretical framework is presented for calculating the polarization, electro-rotation, travelling-wave dielectrophoresis, electro-hydrodynamics and induced-charge electroosmotic flow fields around a freely suspended conducting dimer (two touching spheres) exposed to non-uniform direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC) electric fields. The analysis is based on employing the classical (linearized) Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) formulation under the standard linearized 'weak-field' assumption and using the tangent-sphere coordinate system. Explicit expressions are first derived for the axisymmetric AC electric potential governed by the Robin (mixed) boundary condition applied on the dimer surface depending on the resistance-capacitance circuit (RC) forcing frequency.

Shaping Block Copolymer Microparticles by Positively Charged Polymeric Nanoparticles.

Macromol Rapid Commun

September 2022

Key Lab of Materials Chemistry for Energy Conversion & Storage (HUST) of Ministry of Education, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), Wuhan, 430074, China.

Shape-transforming block copolymer (BCP) microparticles have attracted extensive attention due to their promising applications in nanotechnology, biomedicines, interfacial science, and other fields. As their performance is highly associated to their shape and structure, it is very important to realize the precise control of particle shape. In this report, a method is proposed to regulate the shape and structure of polystyrene-b-polydimethoxysiloxane (PS-b-PDMS) microparticles by using positively charged core-crosslinked nanoparticles (CNPs) as a cosurfactant, combining with cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB).

KNbO·3HO-based Janus nanosheets with water dispersibility and surface activity were prepared sequential regioselective surface modification. To provide individual Janus nanosheets with these two properties, phenylphosphonic acid and phosphoric acid were utilized for surface modification at interlayers I and II of KNbO·3HO, respectively, and the resulting product was exfoliated into single-layered nanosheets by ultrasonication in water. The resulting aqueous dispersion of the Janus nanosheets showed lower surface tension than pure water, confirming that the Janus nanosheets had surface activity.
