The binary intermetallic clathrates KSi ( = 0.4; 1.2), RbSi, RbSi and CsSi were prepared from ₄Si₄ ( = K, Rb, Cs) precursors by spark-plasma route (SPS) and structurally characterized by Rietveld refinement of PXRD data. The clathrate-II phase RbSi was synthesized for the first time. Partial crystallographic site occupancy of the alkali metals, particularly for the smaller Si dodecahedra, was found in all compounds. SPS preparation of NaSi with different SPS current polarities and tooling were performed in order to investigate the role of the electric field on clathrate formation. The electrical and thermal transport properties of KSi and KSi in the temperature range 4-700 K were investigated. Our findings demonstrate that SPS is a novel tool for the synthesis of intermetallic clathrate phases that are not easily accessible by conventional synthesis techniques.

Novel high-stopping power scintillators for medical applications.

Proc SPIE Int Soc Opt Eng

February 2024

Radiation Monitoring Devices, Inc., 44 Hunt St., Watertown, MA, USA 02472- 4624.

Development of new scintillator materials is a continuous effort, which recently has been focused on materials with higher stopping power. Higher stopping power can be achieved if the compositions include elements such as Tl (Z=81) or Lu (Z=71), as the compounds gain higher densities and effective atomic numbers. In context of medical imaging this translates into high detection efficiency (count rates), therefore, better image quality (statistics, thinner films) or lower irradiation doses to patients in addition to lowering of cost.

Article Synopsis
  • This study analyzed the relationship between the urinary sodium to potassium ratio (UNa-K ratio), high blood pressure (BP) types, and microalbuminuria (MAU) in 1,782 adults from the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study.
  • It found that individuals with a higher UNa-K ratio (>3.14) had significantly greater chances of having isolated systolic hypertension (ISH), systolic-diastolic hypertension (SDH), and MAU compared to those with lower ratios.
  • The results suggest that an increased UNa-K ratio is linked to a higher risk of hypertension and potential kidney issues.

Objective: Potassium ion disorders are prevalent among patients in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), yet there is a notable deficiency in established protocols and supplemental plans for potassium management. This retrospective study conducted at a single center aims to explore the relationship between potassium levels, their variability, and the 28-day mortality rate in ICU patients.

Methods: This study analyzed data from patients admitted to the ICU of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University between October 2022 and October 2023.

Article Synopsis
  • 2D materials, such as transition metal-dichalcogenides like MoS, have gained significant attention for their unique layered structures, which lead to distinct physicochemical properties when isolated as single layers compared to their bulk forms.
  • The ability to stack and twist these layers creates new phenomena, such as Moiré patterns, while misfit layer compounds (MLCs) introduce unconventional lattice structures that allow for the formation of nanotubes.
  • The stability and behavior of these nanostructures, particularly under elevated temperatures, are important aspects that remain underexplored, prompting studies using advanced techniques like electron microscopy and synchrotron-based X-ray methods to understand their decomposition and recrystallization processes.

Structural Expansion and Enhanced Photocurrent Conversion of Selenido Stannates with Cu Ions.

JACS Au

October 2024

Institute of Nanotechnology (INT) and Karlsruhe Nano Micro Facility (KNMFi), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Kaiserstrasse 12, 76131 Karlsruhe, Germany.

As a means of tuning the electronic properties of tin-chalcogenide-based compounds, we present a strategy for the compositional and structural expansion of selenido stannate frameworks under mild conditions by introducing Cu ions into binary anionic Sn/Se aggregates in ionothermal reactions. The variable coordination modes of Cu-contrasting with tetrahedral {SnSe} or trigonal bipyramidal {SnSe} units-and corresponding expansion toward ternary Cu/Sn/Se substructures helped to add another degree of freedom to the nanoarchitectures. As desired, the variation of the structural features was accompanied by concomitant changes of the physical properties.
