This study represents the first comprehensive chiton study from Alacranes Reef, the largest reef system in the Gulf of Mexico. Nine chiton species were found in seven localities within the area, in the intertidal and subtidal to 12 m depth. SEM examination of , , and , showed variations in the sculpture and radular teeth morphology when compared to specimens of the same species from Florida Keys, Bahamas and Puerto Rico. The distribution ranges of , and are extended into the south-western area of the Gulf of Mexico. Altogether, combining previous literature and the present survey, reports eleven chiton species which have now been recorded within the Alacranes reef area.

Phase shifts from hard coral to macroalgae have led to the formulation of a top-down herbivory paradigm, whose assumption is that a reduction in herbivory is the primary driver of these changes. Caribbean parrotfish from Scarus and Sparisoma genera are usually known as main reef herbivorous. Yet, they are a diverse group of organisms that perform multiple functions, including the bioerosion of reef structures.

Here we report the bleached coral cover and its drivers observed at Alacranes Reef in 2015. Our results show that 2015 was an unprecedented heat stress event. However, we observed low coral bleaching, with the most substantial impact on sites with a 10-20% of coral cover with bleaching.
