What about physical contacts between epidermal keratinocytes and sensory neurons?

Published: January 2018

Recent studies have demonstrated that keratinocytes closely participate in sensory transduction, and therefore, intra-epidermal free nerve endings are not exclusive transducers of pain. This discovery implies the existence of close afferent communication from keratinocytes to sensory neurons. Although reciprocal interactions between keratinocytes and intra-epidermal free nerve endings via soluble mediators are well established, little attention has been paid to physical contacts between keratinocytes and intra-epidermal free nerve endings. This review proposes to consider the ultrastructural and functional knowledge of these contacts, in both human skin biopsies and keratinocyte-sensory neuron cocultures to speculate on the possible existence of synaptic contacts.

Article Synopsis
  • Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is a rare skin cancer affecting the penoscrotal region, and reconstructive surgery poses significant challenges.
  • The study evaluated the use of the SCIP (superficial circumflex iliac artery perforator) propeller flap for reconstructing defects caused by EMPD in 24 patients over 12 years.
  • Results showed that the SCIP propeller flap was safe, with no major complications, and all patients achieved good healing and maintained function without recurrence for up to 59 months.

Aims: There have been exceptional reports of morphoea presenting with epidermal changes overlapping histopathologically with cutaneous T cell lymphoma of the mycosis fungoides type (MF). This phenomenon gives rise to an ambiguous clinicopathological scenario in which distinguishing these conditions may be challenging. The aim of this study is to characterise the clinical, histopathological and molecular findings of this phenomenon through a case series.

Background/aim: Extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) is a rare, slow growing intra-epidermal malignant neoplasm that arises in areas rich in apocrine glands. Several common sites of occurrence have been reported, including the vulva, perianal region, perineum, and scrotum. Most relevant studies rely on small data bases.

L-menthol is known to activate transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) and induce analgesia to thermal stimuli. However, since thermal stimulation leads to the interaction among the other TRP channels, it was unclear whether L-menthol causes analgesia to stimuli other than thermal stimuli. Therefore, we aimed to investigate whether activating TRPM8 via topical application of 10% menthol solution attenuates pain-related somatosensory-evoked potentials (pSEPs) and affects numerical rating scale (NRS) score using intra-epidermal electrical stimulation (IES).
