Background: We present a case of stress-induced cardiomyopathy (Takotsubo cardiomyopathy) caused by a venous air embolism during a craniotomy performed in the sitting position.
Case Description: A 69-year-old woman was admitted to the neurosurgical department and scheduled for elective resection of a cerebellar metastasis in the sitting position. After craniotomy and opening of the posterior fossa, a venous air embolism was detected via transesophageal echocardiography. The patient immediately presented with cardiac decompensation with signs of takotsubo or stress-induced cardiomyopathy.
Conclusions: Intensivists and anesthesiologists in the operating room and in intensive care units need to be aware of stress-induced cardiomyopathy as a probably underdiagnosed disease entity, especially as management differs significantly from other forms of cardiogenic shock. Diagnosis can be accomplished quickly by bedside echocardiography, emphasizing the need for availability of this tool and the integration of stress-induced cardiomyopathy in diagnostic algorithms in the intensive care unit.

Objectives: Contrast agents are frequently administered in computed tomography (CT) scans used for opportunistic screening of osteoporosis. The objective of this study is to compare the impact of contrast-related bone mineral density (BMD) increase between phantom-based and internal CT calibration techniques.
Materials And Methods: Phantom-based and internal CT calibration techniques were used to determine trabecular BMD in 93 existing clinical CT scans of the lumbar spine of 34 subjects, scanned before and after administration of contrast agents.

Introduction: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) in patients receiving extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support, leading to requirement of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in 70% of ECMO patients. Parallel arrangement of CRRT and ECMO circuits is common in adult patients. However, CRRT may also be integrated directly into the ECMO circuit.

The transition to net zero emissions requires the capture of carbon dioxide from industrial point sources, and direct air capture (DAC) from the atmosphere for geological storage. Dissolved CO has reactivity to rock core, and while the majority of previous studies have concentrated on reservoir rock or cap-rock reactivity, the underlying seal formation may also react with CO. Drill core from the underlying seal of a target CO storage site was reacted at in situ conditions with pure CO, and compared with an impure CO stream with SO, NO and O that could be expected from hard to abate industries.

Background: Petroclival meningiomas are still a neurosurgical challenge due to their proximity to cranial nerves and cerebral vasculature along the surgical corridor. The usual extension of large petroclival meningiomas is along the posterior fossa, frequently compromising and displacing adjunct cranial nerves such as the sixth and seventh-eight cranial nerve complex with brainstem compression, causing progressive neurological deficit and severe headache. The goal of sizeable petroclival meningioma surgery treatment is a maximal resection with preservation of neurological function.
