The human polyomaviruses BK (BKPyV) and JC (JCPyV) are ubiquitous pathogens long associated with severe disease in immunocompromised individuals. BKPyV causes polyomavirus-associated nephropathy and hemorrhagic cystitis, whereas JCPyV is the causative agent of the fatal demyelinating disease progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. No effective therapies targeting these viruses are currently available. The goal of this study was to identify Chinese medicinal herbs with antiviral activity against BKPyV and JCPyV. We screened extracts of Chinese medicinal herbs for the ability to inhibit hemagglutination by BKPyV and JCPyV virus-like particles (VLPs) and the ability to inhibit BKPyV and JCPyV binding and infection of host cells. Two of the 40 herbal extracts screened, and , had hemagglutination inhibition activity on BKPyV and JCPyV VLPs and further inhibited infection of the cells by BKPyV and JCPyV, as evidenced by reduced expression of viral proteins in BKPyV-infected and JCPyV-infected cells after treatment with or extract. The results in this work show that both and may be sources of potential antiviral compounds for treating BKPyV and JCPyV infections.

Sludge resource utilization is one of the important routines for transmitting fecal pollution to water and soil, and sludge dewatering is a crucial step for sludge resource utilization. However, it remains unclear the decay characteristics and persistence of fecal pollution indicators after sludge dewatering. In this study, the persistence of six fecal pollution indicators, namely E.

Polyomaviruses are a group of small, non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA viruses that can infect various hosts, including humans. BKPyV causes conditions such as human polyomavirus-associated nephropathy (HPyVAN), human polyomavirus-associated haemorrhagic cystitis (HPyVHC), and human polyomavirus-associated urothelial cancer (HPyVUC). JC polyomavirus (JCPyV), on the other hand, is the causative agent of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a severe demyelinating disease of the central nervous system.

Knowledge of Human Polyomavirus (HPyV) infection in the anal area and its association with sexually transmitted infections such as Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) remains limited. Therefore, anal specimens from 150 individuals of both sexes were analyzed for screening purposes. HPV DNA was found in 50.

Worldwide, the incidence of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is rising, accounting for approximately 2% of all cancer diagnoses and deaths. The etiology of RCC is still obscure. Here, we assessed the presence of HPyVs in paraffin-embedded tissue (FFPE) resected tissue from patients with RCC by using different molecular techniques.
