Introduction: Insecticide-treated bed nets are often used as a physical barrier to prevent infection of malaria. In Sub-Saharan Africa, one of the most important ways of reducing the malaria burden is the utilization of insecticide-treated bed nets. Purpose: This study aimed to assess whether kidney stone burden and risk factors at the time of kidney donor evaluation were associated with a symptomatic stone event post-donor evaluation.

Methods: We identified adults evaluated at Mayo Clinic (two sites) (2000-2011) for living kidney donation and had either a personal history or radiological evidence of kidney stone disease. We analyzed demographics, stone risk factors, stone number/size, and the committee's donation decision and reasons.

Precise identification of somatic and germline variants in the absence of matched normal samples.

Brief Bioinform

November 2024

The Department of Medical Oncology, Jilin Cancer Hospital, No. 1066, Jinhu Road, Changchun, 130012, China.

Somatic variants play a crucial role in the occurrence and progression of cancer. However, in the absence of matched normal controls, distinguishing between germline and somatic variants becomes challenging in tumor samples. The existing tumor-only genomic analysis methods either suffer from limited performance or insufficient interpretability due to an excess of features.

Background: Despite advancements in valve implantation devices, vascular access complications (VAC) remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality for those undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). We describe pre-operative imaging analysis of the aortoiliac and femoral arterial beds using the TransAtlantic intersociety consensus (TASC) score, ilio-femoral tortuosity, and procedural characteristics to identify anatomic risk factors predictive of VAC in TAVR.

Methods: Consecutive patients undergoing TAVR from 2012 to 2022 at a single North Dakota hospital were retrospectively reviewed.

Mandatory surveillance of bacteremia conducted by automated monitoring.

Front Public Health

December 2024

Department of Data Integration and Analysis, Statens Serum Institut, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Except for a few countries, comprehensive all-cause surveillance for bacteremia is not part of mandatory routine public health surveillance. We argue that time has come to include automated surveillance for bacteremia in the national surveillance systems, and explore diverse approaches and challenges in establishing bacteremia monitoring. Assessed against proposed criteria, surveillance for bacteremia should be given high priority.
