To better understand Simian betaretrovirus (SRV) seropositivity in virus-negative macaques, we transfused blood from SRV-infected or suspect donors into immunosuppressed naive recipients. Our results do not support typical SRV1-5 infection as the cause, but provide evidence for several possibilities including serological artifact, new/different SRV, or an endogenous virus.

Lymphoproliferative disorders of natural killer (NK)-cell lineage are well documented in humans but have yet to be documented in non-human primates (NHPs). Here we describe a case of NK-cell lymphoproliferative disorder/leukemia in a 20-y-old captive female rhesus macaque (). The animal clinically had mild splenomegaly and marked lymphocytosis with small-to-medium lymphocytes in blood smears.

Simian retrovirus subtype 8 (SRV-8) infections have been reported in cynomolgus monkeys () in China and America, but its pathogenicity and immunogenicity are rarely reported. In this work, the SRV-8-infected monkeys were identified from the monkeys with anemia, weight loss, and diarrhea. To clarify the impact of SRV-8 infection on cynomolgus monkeys, infected monkeys were divided into five groups according to disease progression.

Studies of viruses that coevolved with lemurs provide an opportunity to understand the basal traits of primate viruses and provide an evolutionary context for host-virus interactions. Germline integration of endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are fossil evidence of past infections. Hence, characterization of novel ERVs provides insight into the ancient precursors of extant viruses and the evolutionary history of their hosts.

Minor-groove base triples formed between stem 1 and loop 2 of the simian retrovirus type 1 (SRV-1) mRNA frameshifting pseudoknot are essential in stimulating -1 ribosomal frameshifting. How tertiary base triple formation affects the local stabilities of secondary structures (stem 1 and stem 2) and thus ribosomal frameshifting efficiency is not well understood. We made a short peptide nucleic acid (PNA) that is expected to invade stem 1 of the SRV-1 pseudoknot by PNA-RNA duplex formation to mimic the stem 1 unwinding process by a translating ribosome.
