Broadband diffuse optical characterization of elastin for biomedical applications.

Elastin is a key structural protein of dynamic connective tissues widely found in the extracellular matrix of skin, arteries, lungs and ligaments. It is responsible for a range of diseases related to aging of biological tissues. The optical characterization of elastin can open new opportunities for its investigation in biomedical studies. In this work, we present the absorption spectra of elastin using a broadband (550-1350nm) diffuse optical spectrometer. Distortions caused by fluorescence and finite bandwidth of the laser source on estimated absorption were effectively accounted for in measurements and data analysis and compensated. A comprehensive summary and comparison between collagen and elastin is presented, highlighting distinct features for its accurate quantification in biological applications.

We propose an overview of the Rytov approximation in diffuse optics of biological tissues, for the inverse and forward problems. First, we show a physical interpretation of the Rytov approximation as a type of partial pathlength (named fluence rate partial pathlength) which is distinct from the usual partial pathlength for reflectance measurements. Recent work has shown rapid microstructural brain changes in response to learning new tasks. These cognitive tasks tend to draw on multiple brain regions connected by white matter (WM) tracts. Peripapillary pachychoroid syndrome (PPS) is a recently described condition, classified within the pachychoroid disease spectrum characterized by focal or diffuse thickening of the choroid due to dilation of choroidal vessels in the Haller's layer (pachyvessels), thinning of the choriocapillaris and the Sattler's layer, and accompanied by increased choroidal permeability and damage to the retinal pigment epithelium. Unlike other pachychoroid diseases that involve changes in the central retina, PPS presents with choroidal thickening and intra- or subretinal fluid located nasally in the macular region, near the optic disc. This review aims to summarize and analyze current data on the clinical features, pathogenesis, and treatment options for PPS found in the literature.

This review analyzes the primary etiological factors of diffuse lamellar keratitis following various laser corneal refractive surgery techniques. The use of advanced diagnostic methods such as optical coherence tomography, confocal microscopy, and immunohistochemical methods has allowed for the identification of the main pathogenetic mechanisms underlying this condition, which will help improve the prevention, as well as assist with the development of optimal treatment strategies for this complication.
