The energetics and diffusion of water molecules and hydrated ions (Na, Cl) passing through nanopores in graphene are addressed by dispersion-corrected density functional theory calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Pores of about 0.8 nm in diameter with different pore-edge passivations, with (H) and (O, H) atoms, were considered. Our MD simulations show a water flux through the hydroxylated pores of about one HO molecule every three picoseconds, in close agreement with recent experiments that estimated a water flux of three molecules per picosecond through pores of ∼1 nm. We also find that both pores are effective in blocking hydrated Na and Cl ions with large energy barriers, ranging from 12 to 15 eV. In addition, pore passivation with O atoms would increase the water transport through hydroxylated pores, due to the formation of hydrogen bonds with nearby water molecules, which is not observed in the hydrogenated pores.

The removal of antimony from wastewater using traditional methods such as adsorption and membrane filtration generates large amounts of antimony-containing hazardous wastes, posing significant environmental threats. This study proposed a new treatment strategy to reductively remove and recover antimony from wastewater using an advanced UV/sulfite reduction process in the form of valuable strategic metalloid antimony (Sb(0)), thus preventing hazardous waste generation. The results indicated that more than 99.

Defect-Induced Electron Localization Promotes D2O Dissociation and Nitrile Adsorption for Deuterated Amines.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

Tianjin University, Department of Chemistry, #92, Weijin Road, Nankai District, Department of Chemistry, School of Science, Tianjin University, 300072, Tianjin, CHINA.

Electrochemical reductive deuteration of nitriles is a promising strategy for synthesizing deuterated amines with D2O as the deuterated source. However, this reaction suffers from high overpotentials owing to the sluggish D2O dissociation kinetics and high thermodynamic stability of the C≡N triple bond. Here, low-coordinated copper (LC-Cu) is designed to decrease the overpotential for the electrosynthesis of the precursor of Melatonin-d4, 5-methoxytryptamine-d4, by 100 mV with a 68% yield (Faraday efficiency), which is 4 times greater than that of high-coordinated copper (HC-Cu).

Hydrated cable bacteria exhibit protonic conductivity over long distances.

Electronics Sciences and Technology Division, United States Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, DC 20375.

This study presents the direct measurement of proton transport along filamentous , or cable bacteria. Cable bacteria are filamentous multicellular microorganisms that have garnered much interest due to their ability to serve as electrical conduits, transferring electrons over several millimeters. Our results indicate that cable bacteria can also function as protonic conduits because they contain proton wires that transport protons at distances >100 µm.

Surface State Control of Apatite Nanoparticles by pH Adjusters for Highly Biocompatible Coatings.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

Department of Materials Science and Technology, Nagaoka University of Technology, 1603-1 Kamitomioka, Nagaoka, Niigata 940-2188, Japan.

Apatite nanoparticles are biocompatible nanomaterials, so their film formation on biodevices is expected to provide effective bonding with living organisms. However, the biodevice-apatite interfaces have not yet been elucidated because there is little experimental evaluation and discussion on the nanoscale interactions, as well as the apatite surface reactivities. Our group has demonstrated the biomolecular adsorption properties on a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) sensor coated with apatite nanoparticles, demonstrating the applicability of apatite nanoparticle films on devices.

Solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are increasingly favored over liquid electrolytes for emerging energy storage devices due to their safety features, enhanced stability, and multifunctionality. Minor solvents (such as water) are often introduced unintentionally or intentionally into SPEs. Although it can significantly affect SPEs' electrochemical and mechanical properties, the fundamental role of such solvent content has rarely been studied.
