Isothioureas tethered to bridged-bicyclic tertiary allylic amines can be converted to carbodiimides through reaction with Hg(II) salts. Intramolecular cyclization of the tethered tertiary allylic amines to the carbodiimides afford zwitterionic intermediates that undergo 1,3-diaza-Claisen rearrangements, affording highly substituted tricyclic guanidines.

Isothiourea-catalyzed multicomponent cascade reactions are challenging due to the existence of competitive side reactions between multiple reaction partners and intermediates. Herein, we report a practical and efficient protocol for the stereoselective divergent synthesis of pyrazolone-derived β-amino acid esters and β-lactams by isothiourea catalysis. Two distinct reaction pathways are identified, which are controlled by esterification or lactamization of the zwitterionic intermediate.

Catalytic asymmetric transformation of donor-acceptor cyclopropanes (DACs) has been proven to be a highly valuable and robust strategy to construct diverse types of enantioenriched molecules. However, the use of 1,1,2,2-tetrasubstituted DACs to form products bearing quaternary stereocenters remains a long-term unsolved challenge. Here, we report the copper-catalyzed asymmetric aminative ring opening of tetrasubstituted alkynyl DACs that delivers a myriad of α-tertiary amines with high levels of enantioselectivities.

A group of new zwitterion based ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) have been synthesized. Depending on the counter anion (mesylate or hydrogen sulfate) the phase behavior of the resulting ILCs is quite different. Mesylate based ILCs show complex phase behavior with multiple phases depending on the alkyl chain length.

The fused eight-membered carbocycles (EMCs) play vital roles in the medicinal and biological investigations of many natural products and marketed drugs. The traditional synthesis of [6-8-6] benzo-fused derivatives involves multistep reactions and low yields, making the development of a one-step synthesis method a more challenging work. Here, we present a novel strategy for one-step construction of [6-8-6] benzo-fused scaffold from propargyl diazoacetates substituted with benzyl-nitrogen heterocyclic ring via Rh(ll)-catalyzed carbene/alkyne metathesis (CAM) and selective C-H bond insertion.
