This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of Teucrium polium (TP) on carbon tetrachloride (CCl) induced spleen, erythrocyte's oxidative stress, and genotoxicity in rats. TP was found to contain large amounts of polyphenols (150 mg GAE/G of dry plant) and flavonoids (60 mg QE/g of quercetin dry plant). The CCl (0.5 ml/kg) treated rats exhibited significant reductions in serum vitamin A (VA), vitamin E (VE) and total antioxidant status (TAS). Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and conjugated dienes (CD) were significantly high in the CCl group compared to controls. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were significantly decreased in CCl rats. Cytogenetic trials revealed remarkable increases in the frequency of chromosomal aberrations (CAs) and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) following CCl administration. Pretreatment with TP prevented damages caused by CCl. Spleen characterised by necrosis was detected in CCl as compared to controls. Pretreatment with TP considerably decreased the perturbation.

Article Synopsis
  • The Balkan Peninsula is a key area for studying plant diversity due to its ecological variety and the complexities of species taxonomies.
  • A study of 57 populations using genetic and morphological methods revealed two main genetic clusters, with one cluster localized in the northwestern Dinarides and the other spread across the rest of the region.
  • Genetic and morphological differences were more prominent in peripheral populations, while they diminished in regions where the clusters met, indicating a link between genetic structure and the area's geological and reproductive characteristics.

Phytochemical Profiling and Bioactivity Assessment of L. Essential Oil and Extracts: Experimental and In Silico Insights.

Pharmaceuticals (Basel)

November 2024

Research Team of Chemistry of Bioactive Molecules and the Environment, Laboratory of Innovative Materials and Biotechnology of Natural Resources, Faculty of Sciences, Moulay Ismaïl University, B.P. 11201, Zitoune, Meknes 50070, Morocco.

L., a member of the Lamiaceae family, is widely used in traditional medicine for its therapeutic properties. This study aims to analyze the chemical composition of its essential oil and extracts, evaluate their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities, and investigate the interactions of their bioactive compounds with biological targets using in silico methods to better understand their mechanisms of action.

Novel neo-clerodane diterpenoids from Teucrium quadrifarium and their anti-ferroptosis effect.

Nat Prod Bioprospect

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Functions and Applications of Medicinal Plants, Guizhou Medical University, Guiyang, 550014, People's Republic of China.

Teucrifarides A-D (1-4), four previously unreported neo-clerodane-type diterpenoids, combined with sixteen known analogs (5-20), were purified from Teucrium quadrifarium. The absolute forma of compounds 1-4 were determined via spectroscopic and ECD calculation methods, together with X-ray crystallography experiments. Among them, compound 1 possessed a 5,20-epoxy ring featuring a unique cage-like 12-oxatricyclo [5.

Background And Objectives: Recently, the anti-herpetic activities of different plant species have been investigated. This study evaluated the effects of aqueous extract on the HSV-1 virus-infected Vero cell.

Materials And Methods: The IC of the aqueous extract was obtained by the maceration of the plant in boiling water and has been measured with the MTT method, also the q-PCR was used to study viral gene expression reduction.
