Twelve subjects with chronic obstructive lung disease and a partially reversible obstruction received increasing single doses of bopindolol (1, 2, 4, and 8 mg), pindolol (7.5, 15, and 30 mg), and atenolol (50 and 100 mg). Resting heart rate and blood pressure were reduced in a dose-dependent fashion. The actions of the drugs on lung function were assessed by whole body plethysmography. Pindolol did not influence mean airway resistance (Raw). Bopindolol (1, 2 and 4 mg) and atenolol (50 mg) exhibited a neutral effect on mean Raw. Atenolol (100 mg) and to a lesser extent bopindolol (8 mg) induced a long-lasting increase in mean Raw.

Two sensitive fluorometric methods were developed for the determination of both bopindolol malonate (BOP) and celiprolol HCl (CLP) based on measuring their native fluorescence in methanol and acetonitrile, respectively. For BOP, the fluorescence was measured at 316 nm after excitation at 278 nm. The proposed method was successfully applied to the assay of commercial tablets as well as content uniformity testing.

Beta-adrenoceptor blocking drugs (beta-blockers) are one of the most frequently used class of cardiovascular drugs that are mainly used in conventional dosage forms., which have their own limitations including hepatic first-pass metabolism, high incidence of adverse effects due to variable absorption profiles, higher frequency of administration and poor patient compliance. Essentially, attempts have been made to develop novel drug delivery systems for beta-blockers, including transdermal delivery systems, to circumvent the drawbacks of conventional drug delivery.

Studies on chiral resolution of beta-blocker and H1-antihistamine drugs by CZE using human serum transferrin are described. The drugs with different structures passed a pseudostationary protein zone in a coated capillary applying the partial filling method for the chiral separation. In this study we screened 15 compounds; most of them showed longer migration time, indicating an interaction with transferrin.
