Objectives: BK virus (BKV) is highly seroprevalent in humans. After primary infection, it remains latent in the urinary tract and can reactivate in immunocompromised individuals, leading to interstitial nephropathy or hemorrhagic cystitis. The BKV viral load (VL) in plasma correlates with the occurrence of nephropathy and can be monitored in kidney graft recipients; the early detection of BKV viremia can enable an early reduction of immunosuppressant drug doses and the prevention of BKV-associated nephropathy.

Neurofilament Light Chain under the Lens of Structural Mass Spectrometry.

ACS Chem Neurosci

January 2025

National Measurement Laboratory, LGC, Queens Road, TW11 0LY Teddington, U.K.

Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is an early nonspecific biomarker in neurodegenerative diseases and traumatic brain injury, indicating axonal damage. This work describes the detailed structural characterization of a selected primary calibrator with the potential to be used in future reference measurement procedure (RMP) development for the accurate quantification of NfL. As a part of the described workflow, the sequence, higher-order structure as well as solvent accessibility, and hydrogen-bonding profile were assessed under three different conditions in KPBS, artificial cerebrospinal fluid, and artificial cerebrospinal fluid in the presence of human serum albumin.

Background: Rapid onset of epidural analgesia is an important concern for the parturient. Commonly, the local anaesthetic mixture is administered through the epidural catheter. Drugs administered through the epidural needle might decrease the onset time and enhance the spread of medication within the epidural space.
