The investigations have been performed on thyroid tissue excised from patients suffering from euthyroid goiter and thyrotoxicosis. The study of thyroid thyrotoxic tissue has revealed the decrease in the number of free receptors to 3H-PGE2 caused by the enhanced production of receptor-endogenous PGE2 complexes whose level in thyrotoxic tissue was significantly higher than in euthyroid tissue. PGE2 and GppNHp had a pronounced stimulating effect on adenylate cyclaze activity both in euthyroid and thyrotoxic tissues, with enzyme sensitivity to stimulating effects considerably increased in the latter case.

Arsenic, a well-known environmental endocrine disruptor, exerts interference on the body's endocrine system. Our previous investigations have demonstrated that chronic exposure to sodium arsenite (NaAsO) can induce thyroid damage and dysfunction in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Vitamin D (VD) is an indispensable fat-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in maintaining thyroid health.

Actions of thyroid hormones and thyromimetics on the liver.

Thyroid hormones (triiodothyronine and thyroxine) are pivotal for metabolic balance in the liver and entire body. Dysregulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis can contribute to hepatic metabolic disturbances, affecting lipid metabolism, glucose regulation and protein synthesis. In addition, reductions in circulating and intrahepatic thyroid hormone concentrations increase the risk of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease by inducing lipotoxicity, inflammation and fibrosis.

Pervasive environmental pollutants, specifically particulate matter (PM), possess the potential to disrupt homeostasis of female thyroid hormone (TH). However, the precise mechanism underlying this effect remains unclear. In this study, we established a model of PM-induced thyroid damage in female rats through intratracheal instillation and employed histopathological and molecular biological methods to observe the toxic effects of PM on the thyroid gland.

Arsenic, a well-known hazardous toxicant, has been found in recent years to act as an environmental endocrine disruptor that accumulates in various endocrine organs, impeding the normal physiological functions of these organs and altering hormone secretion levels. Moreover, some research has demonstrated a correlation between arsenic exposure and thyroid functions, suggesting that arsenic has a toxicological effect on the thyroid gland. However, the specific type of thyroid gland damage caused by arsenic exposure and its potential molecular mechanism remain poorly understood.

As an alternative to octabromodiphenyl ether (octa-BDE), 1, 2-bis (2,4, 6-tribromophenoxy) ethane (BTBPE) has been widely used in a variety of combustible materials, such as plastics, textiles and furniture. Previous studies have demonstrated the thyroid toxicity of traditional brominated flame retardants for example octa-BDE clearly. Nevertheless, little is known about the thyroid toxicity of alternative novel brominated flame retardants BTBPE.
