We evaluated the role of NM_001024924.1:c.1330+1646C>T (rs13117307) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), situated in the intronic region of exocyst complex component 1 (EXCO1), in the development and spreading of cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Utilizing high resolution melting curve analysis, we analyzed this polymorphism in patients with cervical SCC (n=485) and controls (n=509) in the Polish Caucasian population. Logistic regression analysis was used to adjust for age, parity, oral contraceptive use, tobacco smoking, and menopausal status. The influence of this polymorphism on the expression of EXCO1 was assessed by reverse transcription and real-time quantitative PCR analysis. For all patients with SCC, the p trend value calculated for rs13117307 was statistically significant (p=0.0158). The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for T/T vs. C/C was 1.434 (95 % CI 1.105-1.861, p=0.007). We also found a significant contribution of rs13117307 to tumor stages III, IV and grade of differentiation G3. Other contributors are parity, oral contraceptive use, smoking, and women of postmenopausal age. We observed significant upregulation of EXCO1 transcript levels in the non-cancerous cervical tissues in carriers of the T/T vs. C/C (p=0.016), as well as an increase in the EXCO1 transcript levels in the cervical SCC tissue in carriers of the T/T vs. C/C (p=0.029) and for T/T vs C/T (p=0.0032). The rs13117307 SNP variants may upregulate the transcription of EXCO1, as well as the risk of development and spreading of cervical SCC.

Purpose Of Review: The aim of this review is to investigate the most suitable surgical approach to managing parapharyngeal space (PPS) squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) metastasis.

Recent Findings: SCC metastasis in PPS are extremely rare. The PPS itself is a complex anatomical area, requiring extensive surgical experience and various surgical approaches for effective management.

Objective: Peripheral bilateral vestibular hypofunction (BVH) is a rare condition that is well-studied in the adult population, whereas characterization in children has been limited. We report a pediatric cohort of patients with BVH at a multidisciplinary, tertiary care pediatric vestibular clinic.

Methods: A record review of 832 patients with balance-related complaints in our center was conducted.

Dual-energy CT in head and neck applications.

Neuroradiol J

January 2025

Division of Neurological Radiology, Department of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Radiology, Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, Thailand.

Dual-energy CT (DECT), also known as spectral CT, has advanced diagnostic capabilities in head and neck pathologies beyond those of conventional single-energy CT (SECT). By having images at two distinct energy levels, DECT generates virtual monoenergetic images (VMIs), iodine maps, and quantitative features such as iodine concentration (IC) and spectral Hounsfield unit attenuation curves (SHUAC), which leads to enhancing tissue characterization, reducing artifacts, and differentiating head and neck pathologies. This review highlights DECT's applications in evaluating head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), thyroid cartilage invasion, cervical lymph node metastasis, radiation therapy planning, post-treatment assessment, and role in other head and neck conditions, such as infection and sialolithiasis.

Anti-Estrogen Therapy Achieves Complete Remission and Stability in Recurrent Cervical Cancer: A Case Study.

Am J Case Rep

January 2025

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital, Buddhist Tzu Chi Medical Foundation, Hualien, Taiwan.

BACKGROUND Studies using transgenic mouse models have demonstrated that estrogen is necessary for the development of cervical cancer, particularly in tissues responsive to estrogen. Estrogen also protects cervical cancer cells from apoptosis, suggesting its role in the survival and persistence of cancer cells. CASE REPORT An 84-year-old woman with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and stage III chronic renal failure was diagnosed with cervical squamous cell carcinoma, FIGO stage IB2.

Vermillion lip squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a rare cancer, currently grouped together with the cutaneous lip under the cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) system. Herein, we present a case of an 81-year-old male with locally advanced lower lip SCC involving the vermillion who achieved a complete pathologic response to neoadjuvant cetuximab after the failure of the programed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) inhibitor, cemiplimab. He was followed with clinical observation, with special attention to skin/mucosal surfaces.
