This study aims to demonstrate that redox couples, regardless of their electrical charges, are unnecessary for detecting and quantifying electroactive proteins using an electrochemical sensor functionalized with a molecularly imprinted polymer. Our approach involved designing a polydopamine imprinted biosensor for detecting bovine serum albumin as the model protein. Electrochemical measurements were conducted in a phosphate-buffered solution (PBS) and solutions containing the negatively charged hexacyanoferrate, the neutral ferrocene, or the positively charged hexaammineruthenium (III) probes.

Aims: While COVID-19 no longer presents a global health emergency, the indirect (non-infection) impacts of the pandemic may exacerbate health inequalities in years to come. We examined the socio-economic distribution of the impacts of the pandemic on the psychosocial and economic well-being of children, young people and their families.

Methods: The CoRonavIruS Health Impact Survey (CRISIS) was conducted in seven existing longitudinal cohorts, together involving n = 3072 participants aged 0-19 years.

Bacterial contamination of mobile handwashing stations in hospital settings in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Antimicrob Resist Infect Control

December 2024

Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Transplantation, KU Leuven, Louvain, Belgium.

Background: As part of the containment of the COVID-19 pandemic, mobile handwashing stations (mHWS) were deployed in healthcare facilities in low-resource settings. We assessed mHWS in hospitals in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for contamination with Gram-negative bacteria.

Methods: Water and soap samples of in-use mHWS in hospitals in Kinshasa and Lubumbashi were quantitatively cultured for Gram-negative bacteria which were tested for antibiotic susceptibility.

Rethinking phase 2 trials in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Brain

December 2024

Department of Neurology, UMC Utrecht Brain Center, University Medical Center Utrecht, Utrecht, 3584CX, The Netherlands.

There is a long history in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) of promoting therapies based on Phase 2 data, which then fail in Phase 3 trials. Experience suggests that studies of 6 months in duration are too short, especially with function-based outcome measures. Multiplicity poses a serious threat to data interpretation, and strategies to impute missing data may not be appropriate for ALS where progression is always expected.
