Eragrostis plana Nees (EPN) was used as new and eco-friendly adsorbent for the removal of crystal violet dye (CV) from aqueous solution. Specific surface area (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), point of zero charge (pH), and modified Boehm titration method were used to characterize the EPN material. The effects of initial pH of solution, adsorbent mass, contact time and initial dye concentration, and temperature were studied in batch adsorption mode. Kinetic data were evaluated by pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. The result exhibited that pseudo-second-order model well described the adsorption kinetics of CV onto EPN. Langmuir, Freundlich, and Sips isotherm models were used for analysis of the isothermal data. The equilibrium data of adsorption of CV onto EPN was better fitted with the Sips isotherm. Based on the Sips isotherm model, the maximum adsorption capacity was 76.20 ± 1.20 mg g at 333 K. A high desorption of CV from EPN was obtained using 1.00 mol L of CHCOOH as eluent. The thermodynamic data indicated that the adsorption was spontaneous, endothermic, and physical process. EPN can be used as alternative adsorbent to remove CV from aqueous solution.

Quaternized FeO@chitosan nanoparticles for efficient and selective isolation of heparin.

Int J Biol Macromol

December 2024

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Hunan Provincial Engineering Research Center for Functional Membranes, Hunan University of Science and Technology, Xiangtan 411201, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Heparin is a complex polysaccharide used in medicine, and isolating it from biological mixtures like proteins is challenging, but this study introduces an eco-friendly method to create quaternized FeO@chitosan nanoparticles (QFCNs) for effective heparin adsorption.
  • The QFCNs achieved a high adsorption efficiency of 90.02% and showed better performance than existing adsorbents, indicating their potential for selective capture of heparin, especially in a mixture with BSA at neutral pH.
  • X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggested that the mechanism of adsorption involves electrostatic attraction between heparin and the quaternary ammonium groups on the QFCNs, making them a promising option for efficient and recyclable

Comprehensive Review of CO Adsorption on Shale Formations: Exploring Widely Adopted Isothermal Models and Calculation Techniques.

ACS Omega

December 2024

Western Australia School of Mines, Minerals, Energy and Chemical Engineering, Curtin University, 26 Dick Perry Avenues, Kensington, 6151 WA, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • The burning of fossil fuels significantly contributes to climate change due to CO2 emissions, which account for 70-75% of global warming.
  • Shale reserves may offer a solution for CO2 storage, particularly through adsorbed gas, making it crucial to understand CO2 adsorption processes in shale using various isothermal models.
  • This research evaluates multiple isothermal models to predict CO2 adsorption in different shale samples and suggests enhancements to existing models for improved accuracy, including the integration of molecular dynamics simulations with experimental data.

Numerous studies indicate biochar's nitrogen (N) adsorption capacity plays a crucial role in soil N retention. However, there is limited understanding on inorganic N adsorption mechanisms in biochar derived from aquatic weeds such as water hyacinth (WH). This study investigated ammonium-N (NH-N) and nitrate-N (NO-N) adsorption capacities and mechanisms of WH biochar pyrolyzed at different pyrolysis temperatures of 400 °C, 600 °C, and 800 °C (BC400, BC600, and BC800, respectively).

The European Union regards gallium as a crucial element. Because of that, the retrieval of gallium ions from secondary sources through diverse methodologies is of the utmost significance in an actual economical context. The primary goal of this study was to explore the viability of MgFeO spinel as an adsorbent material for Ga(III) ions recovery from aqueous solutions.

To combat the persistent environmental issues resulting from eutrophication, it is necessary to scavenge excess phosphorous levels from aquatic ecosystems. In response, a cationic adsorbent was prepared by modifying agrowaste-derived natural biomacromolecule; nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant. Comprehensive characterization through XRD, FTIR, HR-SEM, SEM-EDX, BET and XPS demonstrated that quaternizing NFC significantly improved its surface chemistry by introducing substantial quaternary ammonium groups.
