The cross-coupling reaction of unactivated alkyl fluorides with alkyl Grignard reagents by a CoCl/LiI/1,3-pentadiene catalytic system is described. The present reaction smoothly cleaved C-F bonds under mild conditions and achieved alkyl-alkyl cross-coupling even when sterically hindered tertiary alkyl Grignard reagents were employed. Since alkyl fluorides are inert toward many reagents and catalytic intermediates, the use of the present reaction enables a new multistep synthetic route to construct carbon frameworks by combining conventional transformations.

This study considered the effects of fluoride, MgO, sucrose, and rGO on the characteristics of the fluoride-carbon-MgO/rGO predicted (F-C-MgO/rGOP) catalyst and its effectiveness in the catalytic ozonation process (COP) for atrazine elimination from aqueous solutions. Using a mixture design, the catalyst composition was optimized to 13.6% sucrose, 50% Mg (OH)2, 25% NaF, and 11.

E2 elimination and SN2 substitution reactions are of central importance in preparative organic synthesis due to their stereospecificity. Herein, atomistic dynamics of a prototype reaction of ethyl chloride with hydroxide ion are uncovered that show strikingly distinct features from the case with fluoride anion. Chemical dynamics simulations reproduce the experimental reaction rate and reveal that the E2 proceeding through a direct elimination mechanism dominates over SN2 for the hydroxide ion reaction.

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a popular method of coating battery electrodes with metal oxides for improved cycling stability. While significant research has focused on the interaction between the reactive metal alkyl precursor and the electrode materials, little is known about the reactivity of the precursor toward other components of the battery electrode, such as the polymer binder. This study presents a combined computational and experimental investigation of the reaction between the popular polyvinylidene (PVDF) binder and the trimethylaluminum (TMA) precursor commonly used for coating AlO by ALD.

Organofluorine compounds are vital across multiple sectors, hence highly selective methods to install fluorine are of considerable importance. The deoxyfluorination of alcohols is a key approach to prepare organofluorine compounds, however, a highly secondary (2°)-selective deoxyfluorination of alcohols has not been realized to date. Herein, we report that borane-mediated deoxyfluorination results in high 2°-selectivity in inter- and intra-molecular competition reactions versus primary (1°), tertiary (3°) and even benzylic (Bn) alcohols.

In biological systems, various stimuli and energies are transduced into membrane potentials via ion transport or binding. The application of this concept to artificial devices may result in biomimetic signal transmitters and energy harvesters. In this study, we investigated the mechanical control of fluoride anion recognition with naphthalenediimide (NDI) monolayers at the air-water interface.
