We have realized encapsulated trilayer MoS devices with gated graphene contacts. In the bulk, we observe an electron mobility as high as 7000 cm/(V s) at a density of 3 × 10 cm at a temperature of 1.9 K. Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations start at magnetic fields as low as 0.9 T. The observed 3-fold Landau level degeneracy can be understood based on the valley Zeeman effect. Negatively biased split gate electrodes allow us to form a channel that can be completely pinched off for sufficiently large gate voltages. The measured conductance displays plateau-like features.

Majorana bound states are expected to appear in one-dimensional semiconductor-superconductor hybrid systems, provided they are homogeneous enough to host a global topological phase. In order to experimentally investigate the uniformity of the system, we study the spatial dependence of the local density of states in multiprobe devices where several local tunneling probes are positioned along a gate-defined wire in a two-dimensional electron gas. Spectroscopy at each probe reveals a hard induced gap and an absence of subgap states at zero magnetic field.

We report an experimental study of quantum point contacts defined in a high-quality strained germanium quantum well with layered electric gates. At a zero magnetic field, we observed quantized conductance plateaus in units of 2/. Bias-spectroscopy measurements reveal that the energy spacing between successive one-dimensional subbands ranges from 1.

We report on measurements of quantized conductance in gate-defined quantum point contacts in bilayer graphene that allow the observation of subband splittings due to spin-orbit coupling. The size of this splitting can be tuned from 40 to 80  μeV by the displacement field. We assign this gate-tunable subband splitting to a gap induced by spin-orbit coupling of Kane-Mele type, enhanced by proximity effects due to the substrate.

When a magnetic impurity exists in a metal, conduction electrons form a spin cloud that screens the impurity spin. This basic phenomenon is called the Kondo effect. Unlike electric-charge screening, the spin-screening cloud occurs quantum coherently, forming spin-singlet entanglement with the impurity.

One-dimensional (1D) electronic transport and induced superconductivity in semiconductor nanostructures are crucial ingredients to realize topological superconductivity. Our approach for topological superconductivity employs a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) formed by an InAs quantum well, cleanly interfaced with an epitaxial superconductor (epi-Al). This epi-Al/InAs quantum well heterostructure is advantageous for fabricating large-scale nanostructures consisting of multiple Majorana zero modes.
