Although hundreds of genetic male sterility (GMS) mutants have been identified in maize, few are commercially used due to a lack of effective methods to produce large quantities of pure male-sterile seeds. Here, we develop a multicontrol sterility (MCS) system based on the maize male sterility 7 (ms7) mutant and its wild-type Zea mays Male sterility 7 (ZmMs7) gene via a transgenic strategy, leading to the utilization of GMS in hybrid seed production. ZmMs7 is isolated by a map-based cloning approach and encodes a PHD-finger transcription factor orthologous to rice PTC1 and Arabidopsis MS1. The MCS transgenic maintainer lines are developed based on the ms7-6007 mutant transformed with MCS constructs containing the (i) ZmMs7 gene to restore fertility, (ii) α-amylase gene ZmAA and/or (iii) DNA adenine methylase gene Dam to devitalize transgenic pollen, (iv) red fluorescence protein gene DsRed2 or mCherry to mark transgenic seeds and (v) herbicide-resistant gene Bar for transgenic seed selection. Self-pollination of the MCS transgenic maintainer line produces transgenic red fluorescent seeds and nontransgenic normal colour seeds at a 1:1 ratio. Among them, all the fluorescent seeds are male fertile, but the seeds with a normal colour are male sterile. Cross-pollination of the transgenic plants to male-sterile plants propagates male-sterile seeds with high purity. Moreover, the transgene transmission rate through pollen of transgenic plants harbouring two pollen-disrupted genes is lower than that containing one pollen-disrupted gene. The MCS system has great potential to enhance the efficiency of maize male-sterile line propagation and commercial hybrid seed production.

Siganus guttatus and Siganus oramin are two major species that are naturally distributed along the Eastern Pacific coast and possess considerable ecological and economic value. Here, we present the construction and comparative analysis of the chromosome-level genomes of these two Siganus species. Employing a hybrid assembly strategy, we partitioned and independently assembled the PacBio, Illumina and Hi-C reads of S.

Using male sterile (MS) lines instead of normal inbred maternal lines in hybrid seed production can increase the yield and quality with lower production costs. Therefore, developing a new MS germplasm is essential for maize hybrid seed production in the future. Here, we reported a male sterility gene , cloned from a newly found MS mutant .

Ten Candidate Genes Were Identified to Be Associated with the Great Growth Differentiation in the Three-Way Cross Hybrid Abalone.

State Key Laboratory of Mariculture Breeding, College of Ocean and Earth Sciences, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361102, China.

Abalone is an economically important mollusk, whose slow growth has impeded the recovery of its wild populations and development of aquaculture. The three-way cross hybrid abalone ((♀ × ♂)♀ × ♂, DF × SS) demonstrated notable diversity in growth traits across the population with genetic differentiation, offering a model for exploring the molecular mechanisms of abalone growth. In this study, a total of 89 SNPs and 97 candidate genes were identified to be associated with growth-related traits of abalone using whole-genome resequencing and a genome-wide association study (GWAS) analysis.

Analyses of the genetic distance and composition of inbred lines are a prerequisite for parental selection and to exploit heterosis in plant breeding programs. The study aimed to assess genetic diversity and population structure of a maize germplasm panel comprising 182 founder lines and 866 derived inbred lines using Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) markers to identify genetically unique lines for hybrid breeding. The founder lines were genotyped with 1201 SNPs, and the derived lines with 1484 SNPs.

MoS-Plasmonic Hybrid Platforms: Next-Generation Tools for Biological Applications.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Applied Chemistry and Institute of Natural Sciences, Kyung Hee University, Yongin-si 17104, Gyeonggi-do, Republic of Korea.

The combination of molybdenum disulfide (MoS) with plasmonic nanomaterials has opened up new possibilities in biological applications by combining MoS's biocompatibility and high surface area with the optical sensitivity of plasmonic metals. These MoS-plasmonic hybrid systems hold great promise in areas such as biosensing, bioimaging, and phototherapy, where their complementary properties facilitate improved detection, real-time visualization, and targeted therapeutic interventions. MoS's adjustable optical features, combined with the plasmon resonance of noble metals such as gold and silver, enhance signal amplification, enabling detailed imaging and selective photothermal or photodynamic therapies while minimizing effects on healthy tissue.
