In order to illustrate heavy metal ecotoxicology associated with interactions between chemicals and biological systems, we investigated physiological changes (metabolism and behavior response) of zebra fish (Danio rerio) under 48 h Cadmium chloride (CdCl) exposure using online monitoring technique. The concentrations of CdCl were designed as 4.26, 42.6 and 85.2 mg/L, which were 0.1, 1.0, and 2.0 based on toxic unit (TU), respectively. The metabolism was assessed using the oxygen consumption (OC), and the behavior response was analyzed in behavior strength (BS). Significant inhibition of both OC and BS could be observed: OC was 617.39 ± 30.48 mg/kg/h in the control, and it decreased rapidly to 229.07 ± 28.66 mg/kg/h in 2.0 TU treatment. BS changed from 0.76 ± 0.07 (control) to 0.39 ± 0.04 (2.0 TU) with the increase of exposure concentrations. Further results suggested that both factors were related to diurnal variation during 48 h exposure, which could be regarded as circadian rhythms: the average values of OC and BS during photo-phase were significantly higher than both during scoto-phase in CdCl treatments (p < 0.05). After integrated analysis, the original values of both OC and BS with wide fluctuation showed a negative linear relationship with CdCl concentration. The levels of both OC and BS were positively correlated with CdCl (r = 0.93 and p < 0.01). It is suggested that both OC and BS provide an objective ground for CdCl stress assessment, and that also could be applied to test the changes of organisms quantitatively in toxic physiology.

Diabetes is characterized by variable loss of insulin-producing beta cells, and new regenerative approaches to increasing the functional beta cell mass of patients hold promise for reversing disease progression. In this Review, we summarize recent chemical biology breakthroughs advancing our knowledge of beta cell regeneration. We present current chemical-based tools, sensors and mechanistic insights into pathways that can be targeted to enhance beta cell regeneration in model organisms.

Aniline Blue is a synthetic dye extensively used in various industries, including textiles, plastics, and biological research due to its effective staining properties. However, its environmental and health impacts, particularly its neurotoxic effects, are poorly understood. While the dye has been associated with carcinogenicity and organ toxicity, the neurobehavioral consequences of Aniline Blue exposure remain underexplored.

Two undescribed rearranged diterpenoids, lobopaucinoids A and B (1 and 2), along with thirteen undescribed lobane-type diterpenoids lobopaucinoids C-O (3-15) including a C (11) and two C (12 and 13) undescribed norditerpenoids, were isolated from the soft coral Lobophytum pauciflorum Ehrenberg (Sarcophytidae family) collected from Xisha Islands of the South China Sea. Additionally, two undescribed prenyleudesmane-type diterpenoids, lobopaucinoids P and Q (16 and 17), as well as two known lobane diterpenoids (18 and 19), were also obtained. Their structures were elucidated based on comprehensive spectroscopic data, Mosher's method, Mo(OAc) or Rh(OCOCF)-induced circular dichroism experiment, quantum chemical calculations, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction and literature comparison.

Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths globally and a key hindrance to extending life expectancy. Celastrol (CEL) demonstrates excellent antitumor activity, but faces challenges like low solubility and a narrow therapeutic window, limiting its clinical application. To address these limitations, drug combinations and nano-delivery systems have emerged as effective solutions.

Glyphosate is a non-selective herbicide widely used in agriculture, and its overexposure poses significant health and environmental risks. Herein, a novel Cu-coordinated fluorescent sensing system (HYBC-Cu system) based on acylhydrazone groups was designed, capable of glyphosate-specific recognition. The HYBC-Cu system was constructed with simple steps, with the advantages of short recognition time (< 1 min), good specificity, anti-interference, and excellent sensitivity (LOD = 95 nM).
