Arxula adeninivorans-based yeast cell assays for the detection of steroid hormones demonstrated their efficiency for the determination of total hormone activity in a variety of samples using a microtiter plate format. In this study, a preliminary chromatographic separation using thin-layer chromatography plates is introduced in order to allow a rapid identification of the compounds responsible for this hormonal activity. The yeast whole cell assay can then be performed on the plate, producing a detectable signal where a steroid hormone is present. Simultaneous detection of estrogens, progestogens and androgens on the same plate in the picogram range was achieved, while keeping the assay as simple and affordable as possible. The assay requires a single incubation of the thin-layer chromatography plate and the detection of reporter protein production can be performed by fluorescence scanning of the plate at different wavelengths. The chromatographic separation allows the separation of several estrogens, androgens and progestogens, thus making its application for 'real world' samples very useful. In this work, different water-based samples from environmental origins were used to demonstrate the capacity of this new bioassay. Trials showed that most samples, with the exception of complex samples such as wastewater influent, can be assayed.

Small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) plays a pivotal role in diverse cellular processes and is implicated in diseases such as cancer and neurodegenerative disorders. However, large-scale identification of endogenous SUMO-1 faces challenges due to limited enrichment methods and its lower abundance compared to SUMO-2/3. Here we propose a novel combinatorial peptide strategy, combined with anti-adhesive polymer development, to enrich endogenous SUMO-1 modified peptides, revealing a comprehensive SUMOylation landscape.

The absence of a mercaptan compounds analyzer in natural gas pressure reduction stations (PRS) odorizer leads to inaccuracies in the injection dosage, often resulting in quantities beyond standard limits and consequently increasing odorant consumption. Insufficient odorant levels in natural gas can pose safety risks to consumers, as the gas may become odorless at the end of the pipeline. Therefore, accurate determination of the concentration of key odorant compounds in natural gas can reduce both costs and environmental risks.

Background: Chemical derivatization is a common technique in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) metabolomics used to improve the ionizability and chromatographic properties of metabolites in complex biological samples. This process facilitates better detection and separation of a wide array of compounds. The reagent 2-(4-boronobenzyl) isoquinolin-2-ium bromide (BBII), developed as a glucose labeling reagent for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization MS, enhances ionization for glucose and other hydroxyl metabolites.

Background: The metal organic cages (MOCs) are an emerging type of porous material that has attracted considerable research interest due to their unique properties, including good stability and well-defined intrinsic cavities. The chiral MOCs with porous structures have broad application prospects in enantiomeric recognition and separation. However, there are almost no relevant reports on chiral MOCs as chiral stationary phases (CSPs) for enantioseparation by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

In this work, two novel (-)-menthol-based hydrophobic natural eutectic solvents with vanillin and cinnamic acid were prepared and applied as extraction solvents. In this regard, 12 endocrine disruptors, including phenol, 2,4-dimethylphenol, 2,3,6-trimethylphenol, 4--butylphenol, 4--butylphenol, 4--amylphenol, 4--hexylphenol, 4--octylphenol, 4--heptylphenol, 4--octylphenol, and 4--nonylphenol and bisphenol A, were studied in a green tea drink. A temperature-controlled liquid-liquid microextraction was used as the extraction method, and nano-liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection was used as the separation and determination system.
