Tightly focused vectorial optical beams have found extensive applications in variety of technical fields like single-molecule detection, optical tweezers, and super-resolution optical microscopy. Such applications require an accurate measurement and manipulation of focal optical fields. We have developed a compact instrument (with dimensions of 35 × 35 × 30 cm) to rapidly measure the intensity distribution in three dimensions of the focused fields of vectorial beams and any other incident beams. This instrument employs a fluorescent nanoparticle as a probe to scan the focal region to obtain a high spatial resolution of intensity distribution. It integrates a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator to allow for tailoring the point spread function of the optical system, making it a useful tool for multi-purpose and flexible research. The robust applicability of the instrument is verified by measuring the 3D intensity distributions of focal fields of various polarization and wavefront modulated incident beams focused by a high NA (=1.25) objective lens. The minimal data acquisition time achievable in the experiment is about 8 s for a scanning region of 3.2 × 3.2 μm (512 × 512 pixels). The measured results are in good agreement with those predicted by the vectorial diffraction theory.

We treat edge-mode resonance that may exist at boundaries of transversely finite beams illuminating a photonic lattice. The lattice is in the dark state signifying a perfect bound state in the continuum (BIC). The dark state is non-radiative in symmetric systems because lateral waves cannot couple to the lattice due to destructive interference between counter-propagating waves.

Nowadays, metasurfaces have attracted considerable attention due to their promising and advanced control of electromagnetic (EM) waves. However, it is still challenging to shape guided waves into desired free-space mode, while simultaneously manipulating spatial incident waves using a single metasurface. Herein, a class of metasurfaces capable of multiplexing guided and space waves is proposed to achieve advanced EM functionalities in microwave regions, which can find great application potentials in radar systems, wireless communications, and wireless power transfer (WPT).

Decades after being replaced with digital platforms, analogue computing has experienced a surging interest following developments in metamaterials and intricate fabrication techniques. Specifically, wave-based analogue computers which impart spatial transformations on an incident wavefront, commensurate with a desired mathematical operation, have gained traction owing to their ability to directly encode the input in its unprocessed form, bypassing analogue-to-digital conversion. Background: The clinical use of flattening filter free (FFF) radiotherapy has significantly increased in recent years due to its effective enhancement of dose rates and reduction of scatter dose. A proposal has been made to adjust the incident electron angle of the accelerator to expand the application of FFF beams in areas such as large planning target volumes (PTVs). However, the inherent softening characteristics and non-uniformity of lateral dose distribution in FFF beams inevitably lead to increased dosimetry errors, especially for ionization chambers widely used in clinical practice, which may result in serious accidents during FFF radiotherapy.

The generation of vector beams using metasurfaces is crucial for the manipulation of light fields and has significant application potential, ranging from classical physics to quantum science. This paper introduces a novel dielectric metasurface composed of quarter-wave plate (QWP) meta-atoms, known as a QWP metasurface, designed to generate focused vector beams (VBs) of Bell-like states under right circularly polarized illumination. The propagation phase imparted on both the co- and cross-polarized components of the output field constructs hyperbolic and helical phase profiles with topological charge , whereas the Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase acts only on the cross-polarized component to construct another helical phase profile with topological charge .
