AI Article Synopsis

  • The study investigates the impact of unenhanced regions on MRI, often indicative of necrosis, in patients with uterine carcinosarcoma, aiming to understand its prognostic significance.
  • The analysis of 29 patients shows that when unenhanced areas make up more than 10% of the tumor, they are linked to a poorer prognosis; however, pathological necrosis alone did not indicate a poor outcome.
  • Key findings suggest that the extent of unenhanced regions correlates with tumor stage and size, and both lymph node metastasis and significant unenhanced areas are important prognostic factors for overall survival.

Article Abstract

Objective: Carcinosarcoma of the uterine corpus has a poor prognosis. Although pathological necrosis is a prognostic factor of endometrial cancer, the clinicopathological influences of an unenhanced region observed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are inconclusive. The aim of our study was to determine the clinicobiological impact of the presence of an unenhanced region on MRI, which can represent necrosis, in uterine carcinosarcoma.

Methods: The clinicopathological factors of 29 patients diagnosed with uterine carcinosarcoma were assessed retrospectively. The percentage of the tumor that was unenhanced on MRI was determined. The clinicopathological factors related to the unenhanced regions were evaluated. The prognostic significance was assessed using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression model.

Results: Although the presence of pathological necrosis was not a poor prognostic factor (p=0.704), unenhanced regions on MRI correlated with poor prognosis when the unenhanced regions in the tumor accounted for more than 10% of the total tumor (p=0.019). The percentage of unenhanced regions was positively correlated with stage (p=0.028; r=0.4691) and related to tumor size (p=0.086; r=0.3749). The Cox regression analysis indicated that the presence of lymph node (LN) metastasis and more than 10% of the tumor being unenhanced on MRI were prognostic factors of overall survival in the univariate analyses (p=0.018 and p=0.047, respectively).

Conclusion: The unenhanced region on MRI, which represents pathological necrosis, reflects tumor progression, and semi-quantification of the region is useful to predict the prognosis in patients with uterine carcinosarcoma.

This case report presents the details of an elderly man in Zhejiang Province of China, who tested human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) negative and subsequently developed Nodal Marginal Zone Lymphoma (NMZL) along with disseminated infection. The study focuses on analyzing the distinct clinical symptoms and pathological manifestations in order to offer precise diagnosis and effective treatment for patients. A 76-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital due to recurrent fever.

Purpose: To determine the diagnostic value of a comprehensive model based on unenhanced computed tomography (CT) images for distinguishing fat-poor angiomyolipoma (fp-AML) from homogeneous clear cell renal cell carcinoma (hm-ccRCC).

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 27 patients with fp-AML and 63 with hm-ccRCC. Demographic data and conventional CT features of the lesions were recorded (including sex, age, symptoms, lesion location, shape, boundary, unenhanced CT attenuation and so on).

Article Synopsis
  • * A biopsy confirmed the presence of mucinous carcinoma with a Gleason score of 4+3=7, indicating a moderately aggressive cancer, and the disease was classified as stage cT3bN0M0.
  • * After undergoing robotic surgery for prostate removal and lymph node dissection, follow-up showed no signs of cancer recurrence, suggesting that surgery can lead to a favorable outcome for patients with this aggressive form of prostate cancer.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine whether dual-energy computed tomography (DECT), specifically by measuring bowel wall iodine concentration (BWIC), is superior to monoenergetic reconstructions (MR) for the diagnosis and staging of small bowel ischemia in patients with mechanical small bowel obstruction (SBO).

Materials And Methods: From November 2021 to December 2023, all patients with mechanical SBO who underwent contrast-enhanced DECT of the abdomen and pelvis were evaluated for inclusion. Demographic, clinical and biochemical data were collected.

Radiomic features of primary retroperitoneal sarcomas: a prognostic study.

Eur J Cancer

December 2024

Sarcoma Service, Department of Surgery, Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milano, Italy.

Background: Risk-stratification of patients with retroperitoneal sarcomas (RPS) relies on validated nomograms, such as Sarculator. This retrospective study investigated whether radiomic features extracted from computed tomography (CT) imaging could i) enhance the performance of Sarculator and ii) identify G3 dedifferentiated liposarcoma (DDLPS) or leiomyosarcoma (LMS), which are currently consider in a randomized clinical trial testing neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Methods: Patients with primary localized RPS treated with curative-intent surgery (2011-2015) and available pre-operative CT imaging were included.
