In vision, perceptual features are processed in several regions distributed across the brain. Yet, the brain achieves a coherent perception of visual scenes and objects through integration of these features, which are encoded in spatially segregated brain areas. How the brain seamlessly achieves this accurate integration is currently unknown and is referred to as the "binding problem." Among the proposed mechanisms meant to resolve the binding problem, the binding-by-synchrony hypothesis proposes that binding is carried out by the synchronization of distant neuronal assemblies. This study aimed at providing a critical test to the binding-by-synchrony hypothesis by evaluating long-range connectivity using EEG during a motion integration visual task that entails binding across hemispheres. Our results show that large-scale perceptual binding is not associated with long-range interhemispheric gamma synchrony. However, distinct perceptual interpretations were found to correlate with changes in beta power. Increased beta activity was observed during binding under ambiguous conditions and originates mainly from parietal regions. These findings reveal that the visual experience of binding can be identified by distinct signatures of oscillatory activity, regardless of long-range gamma synchrony, suggesting that such type of synchrony does not underlie perceptual binding.

Ambiguity about whether the histidine-rich calcium-binding protein-coding gene (His) or the pore-forming toxin-like gene (PFT) or both are responsible for Fusarium head blight (FHB) resistance conferred by the Fhb1 quantitative trait locus hinders progress toward elucidating Fhb1 resistance mechanisms. Here, with a series of developed lines with or without PFT but all possessing His and five His-carrying PFT mutant lines created via gene editing, we show that PFT does not confer FHB resistance and that the His resistance effect does not require PFT in the tested conditions. We also show that PFT mutations are not associated with morphological and phenological characteristics that often affect FHB severity.

The elementary mechanism and site studies of nanozyme-based inhibition reactions are ambiguous and urgently require advanced nanozymes as mediators to elucidate the inhibition effect. To this end, we develop a class of nanozymes featuring single Cu-N catalytic configurations and B-O sites as binding configurations on a porous nitrogen-doped carbon substrate (B/Cu) for inducing modulable inhibition transfer at the atomic level. The full redistribution of electrons across the Cu-N sites, induced by B-O sites incorporation, yields B/Cu with enhanced peroxidase-like activity versus Cu.

We have developed a method that uses energy landscapes of unbound and bound ligands to compute reorganization free energies for end-point binding free-energy calculations. The method is applied to our previous simulations of fentanyl derivatives bound to the μ opioid receptor in different orientations. Whereas the mean interaction energy provides an ambiguous ranking of binding poses, interaction entropy and ligand reorganization strongly penalize geometric decoys such that native poses observed in CryoEM structures are best ranked.
