Assessment of surface water pollution by organic pollutants is a top priority in many parts of the world, as it provides critical information for implementing effective measures to ensure drinking water safety. This is particularly important in China, where insufficient data of national scale have been acquired on the occurrence of any organic pollutants in the country's water bodies. To fill the knowledge gap, we employed passive samplers to survey polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in 42 freshwaters throughout the country. The dissolved ΣPAH concentrations ranged from 0.28 to 538 ng L, with the highest and lowest values obtained in Southern Lake in Wuhan and in the Nam Co Lake in Tibet, respectively. Average ΣPAH concentrations in West, Central, and East China correlated well with the population densities in these regions. The composition profiles of PAHs showed a mixed PAH source of coal combustion, fossil fuel combustion, and oil spills. In addition, all dissolved PAH concentrations were below the water guidelines developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the European Union, and the Canadian government, except for anthracene in Southern Lake. Our results also demonstrated the feasibility of establishing a global network of monitoring organic pollutants in the aquatic environment with passive sampling techniques.

Ecological restoration is a promising approach to alleviate eutrophication. However, its impacts on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the underlying microbial mechanisms in different habitats of lakes remain unclear. To address this knowledge gap, we measured carbon dioxide (CO), methane (CH) and nitrous oxide (NO) fluxes at both water-air and sediment-water interfaces of eutrophic (Caohai) and restored area (Dapokou) of Dianchi Lake, a typical eutrophic lake in China.

Elimination of stubborn organic micropollutants from water is crucial for bioaccumulation prevention and ecosystem protection. Cold plasma activation technology is a clean, sustainable, and highly effective approach to the degradation of micropollutants and pathogens in contaminated water. In this study, we focus on understanding the processes of simultaneous degradation of multiple micropollutants (8 types at maximum) in flowing water by the recently developed microbubble-enhanced cold plasma activation (MB-CPA) technology.

Anthropogenic water pollution severely threatens human society worldwide, yet the water pollution induced by combined sewer overflow (CSO) remains unclear within climate change and urbanization. Hence, this study integrated the general circulation model (GCM) and shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) projections with water quality modeling, to analyze spatiotemporal patterns and future trends of CSO-induced water pollution under changing environments. Results demonstrated that the given area (Dresden, Germany) encountered significant CSO-induced pollution, with 14,860 kg (95 % confidence interval, CI: 9,040-15,630 kg) of particulate matter (SS), organic compounds (COD, TN, TP), and pharmaceuticals (Carbamazepine, Gabapentin, Ciprofloxacin, Sulfamethoxazole) being discharged annually.

A novel molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) against gatifloxacin based on a hybrid monomer (3-triethoxysilylpropyl methacrylic amide, APTES-MAA) was reported. In this study, the imprinted monolith was synthesized with gatifloxacin as template, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as cross-linker, and APTES-MAA as functional monomer in a mixture of acetonitrile and isooctane as porogen via an optimization based on density functional theory (DFT). The polymers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and mercury porosimetry.
