In this paper, we propose a novel and effective hybrid method, which joins the conventional chroma subsampling and the distortion-minimization-based luma modification together, to improve the quality of the reconstructed RGB full-color image. Assume the input RGB full-color image has been transformed to a YUV image, prior to compression. For each 2×2 UV block, one 4:2:0 subsampling is applied to determine the one subsampled U and V components, U and V . Based on U , V , and the corresponding 2×2 original RGB block, a main theorem is provided to determine the ideally modified 2×2 luma block in constant time such that the color peak signal-to-noise ratio (CPSNR) quality distortion between the original 2×2 RGB block and the reconstructed 2×2 RGB block can be minimized in a globally optimal sense. Furthermore, the proposed hybrid method and the delivered theorem are adjusted to tackle the digital time delay integration images and the Bayer mosaic images whose Bayer CFA structure has been widely used in modern commercial digital cameras. Based on the IMAX, Kodak, and screen content test image sets, the experimental results demonstrate that in high efficiency video coding, the proposed hybrid method has substantial quality improvement, in terms of the CPSNR quality, visual effect, CPSNR-bitrate trade-off, and Bjøntegaard delta PSNR performance, of the reconstructed RGB images when compared with existing chroma subsampling schemes.

Article Synopsis
  • Plant-derived bioactive compounds, particularly rosemary in different forms, can enhance the quality of pork by improving its sensory and microbiological properties while preventing discolouration.
  • The study found that adding rosemary oleoresin (ROL), extract (REX), and essential oil (REO) to minced pork affected its colour, antioxidant levels, and microbial counts during storage.
  • Among the forms tested, REO was most effective at inhibiting lipid oxidation, while REX improved sensory properties, indicating that rosemary may have beneficial effects on meat products.

This study researched the effects of two commercially available zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) β-adrenergic agonists, denoted as ZH-A and ZH-B, on the meat quality characteristics of typical South African feedlot bulls (taurine × indicus composites), over extended aging periods of up to 120 days. The effects of ZH were studied to address concerns about the possible adverse effects of ZH on beef quality following extended aging, which typically occurs during the exportation of beef by boat. The completely randomized control study consisted of 3 homogenous experimental groups, with 3 replicates per treatment and 50 bulls per replicate = 450 animals.

Perceptual encryption (PE) hides the identifiable information of an image in such a way that its intrinsic characteristics remain intact. This recognizable perceptual quality can be used to enable computation in the encryption domain. A class of PE algorithms based on block-level processing has recently gained popularity for their ability to generate JPEG-compressible cipher images.

Bayer color filter array (CFA) images are captured by a single-chip image sensor covered with a Bayer CFA pattern which has been widely used in modern digital cameras. In the past two decades, many compression methods have been proposed to compress Bayer CFA images. These compression methods can be roughly divided into the compression-first-based (CF-based) scheme and the demosaicing-first-based (DF-based) scheme.

Cross-component linear model (CCLM) prediction has been repeatedly proven to be effective in reducing the inter-channel redundancies in video compression. Essentially speaking, the linear model is identically trained by employing accessible luma and chroma reference samples at both encoder and decoder, elevating the level of operational complexity due to the least square regression or max-min based model parameter derivation. In this paper, we investigate the capability of the linear model in the context of sub-sampled based cross-component correlation mining, as a means of significantly releasing the operation burden and facilitating the hardware and software design for both encoder and decoder.
