Article Abstract

Arginine is widely used as aggregation suppressor of proteins in biotechnology and pharmaceutics. However, why the effect of arginine depends on the types of proteins and stresses, including monoclonal antibodies, is still unclear. Here we investigated the precise processes of the thermal aggregation of human immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the presence of additives. As expected, arginine was the best additive to suppress the formation of insoluble aggregates during heat treatment, though it was unable to preserve the monomer content. A systematic analysis of the additives showed that sugars and kosmotropic ion inhibit the formation of soluble oligomers. These behaviors indicate that the thermal aggregation of IgG occurs by (i) the formation of soluble oligomers, which is triggered by the unfolding process that can be stabilized by typical osmolytes, and (ii) the formation of insoluble aggregates through weak cluster-cluster interactions, which can be suppressed by arginine. Understanding the detailed mechanism of arginine will provide useful information for the rational formulation design of antibodies.

We present the implementation of the time-domain multichromophoric fluorescence resonant energy transfer (TC-MCFRET) approach in the numerical integration of the Schrödinger equation (NISE) program. This method enables the efficient simulation of incoherent energy transfer between distinct segments within large and complex molecular systems, such as photosynthetic complexes. Our approach incorporates a segmentation protocol to divide these systems into manageable components and a modified thermal correction to ensure detailed balance.

CMFX: Cross-modal fusion network for RGB-X crowd counting.

December 2024

College of Computer Science and Engineering, Shandong University of Science and Technology, Qingdao 266590, China. Electronic address:

Currently, for obtaining more accurate counts, existing methods primarily utilize RGB images combined with features of complementary modality (X-modality) for counting. However, designing a model that can adapt to various sensors is still an unsolved issue due to the differences in features between different modalities. Therefore, this paper proposes a unified fusion framework called CMFX for RGB-X crowd counting.

Effects of salt ions and pH on deamidated soybean protein hydrogels formation: Molecular structure, thermal aggregation and network.

Food Chem

December 2024

Laboratory of Food Proteins and Colloids, School of Food Science and Engineering, Guangdong Province Key Laboratory for Green Processing of Natural Products and Product Safety, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou 510640, PR China. Electronic address:

The aim of this study was to explore the effects of environmental factors (salt ions and pH) on the thermal gelation process of deamidated soy protein isolate (DSPI). The results indicated that with increasing salt ion concentration, DSPI assembled into larger aggregates, which were more prone to aggregation in thermal reactions, ultimately forming a gel network with higher viscoelasticity. The strength enhancement of ion-induced gel networks followed the order from highest to lowest: Ca > Mg > Na.

Facile Synthesis of Functional Polytrithiocarbonates from Multicomponent Tandem Polymerizations of CS, Thiols, and Alkyl Halides.

J Am Chem Soc

December 2024

Shenzhen Institute of Aggregate Science and Technology, School of Science and Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangdong 518172, China.

Polytrithiocarbonates have attracted significant attention recently because of their good thermal stability, light refractivity, crystallinity, and mechanical properties; however, the exploration of their structures and functionalities has been limited by their synthetic approaches. Multicomponent polymerization featuring simple monomers, mild conditions, diversified product structures, and high efficiency could provide a powerful and versatile tool to synthesize various polytrithiocarbonates from commercially available monomers. Herein, a robust and efficient multicomponent tandem polymerization (MCTP) of CS, dithiols, and alkyl halides was developed in DMF with KCO at room temperature in air to synthesize 12 polytrithiocarbonates with diversified and systematically tuned structures, high molecular weights (s up to 37900 g/mol), and high yields (up to 93%).

Electronic address:

FapC and FapB are biofilm-associated amyloids involved in the virulence of Pseudomonas and other bacteria. We herein demonstrate their exceptional thermal and chemical resilience, suggesting that their biofilm structures might withstand standard sterilization, thereby contributing to the persistence of P. aeruginosa infections.
