Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare but aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer with limited treatment options, often associated with Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) and marked by hypoxic tumor microenvironments that promote resistance to therapies. Belzutifan, an FDA-approved hypoxia-inducible factor-2α (HIF-2α) inhibitor, has shown promise in inhibiting tumor growth; however, its clinical efficacy is hindered by its low solubility, rapid clearance, and limited bioavailability. In this study, we present a strategy using porous silicon (pSi) microparticles and nanoparticles as carriers for the sustained delivery of benzoate to MCC cells.

Background: Visceral pain sensitization and emotional reactions due to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) occur frequently in the general population. Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of IBS. Previous studies have demonstrated that activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) has analgesic effects.

Secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (sHLH) is a rare, rapidly progressive and highly lethal disease. This retrospective cohort study aims to analyze the factors influencing the mortality risk in adult patients with sHLH, which are instrumental to improving our understanding of the high mortality risks associated with sHLH. This study included 85 patients diagnosed with sHLH who were admitted and treated in the Department of Emergency, Peking University People's Hospital between April 2015 and July 2023.

Background: Severe pneumonia after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) is associated with high mortality. Given that cytokine, including Interleukin-6 (IL-6), play a critical role in immune-mediated organ injury in patients with severe COVID-19, we hypothesized that cytokines may also contribute to the pathogenesis of severe pneumonia after allo-HSCT. This study aimed to investigate the role of IL-6 in severe pneumonia post-allo-HSCT and explore its underlying mechanism.

Hardy plants play a crucial role in restoring high-altitude tailings ponds, but the accumulation of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and detoxification mechanisms in alpine plants are understudied. This study first investigated the cadmium (Cd) accumulation capacity and detoxification mechanisms by comparative transcriptomics with different Cd stress (0, 5, 10, 20 and 40 mg L Cd) of Koenigia tortuosa from a lead-zinc mine (4950 m above sea level) in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The findings revealed that, despite elevated Cd concentrations suppressed the growth of Koenigia tortuosa, the plant retained a notable ability to accumulate Cd.
