MicroRNAs are important cellular mediators of mRNA degradation and translation repression, which in turn can have an impact on various processes and, if their function is perturbed, can cause disease. Here, we summarize the recent manuscript by Zhong et al. [(2017) Biosci. Rep. , BSR20160578], which explores microRNA-146a and how it may play an indirect yet vital role in the proliferation of osteoarthritis (OA) chondrocytes. The data presented by the authors could have important implications for future OA therapies.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of death and morbidity among women. A major challenge for clinical management of breast cancer is the dissemination of breast cancer cells from the primary tumor site via lymphatic drainage, resulting in metastatic tumor spread. Recent studies have found that high expression of the microRNA miR-146a-5p is associated with better survival outcomes for breast cancer patients.

MicroRNA-146a-5p (miR-146a-5p) actively participates in the process of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (CI/R) injury. Dysregulation of the tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 6 (TRAF6)/nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) p65 axis is closely associated with inflammatory response. This study aimed to investigate the potential involvement of miR-146a-5p and TRAF6/NF-κB p65 in mediating CI/R progression in vitro.

Glenohumeral osteoarthritis (GOA) is characterized by chronic inflammation leading to joint damage. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are promising therapies because of their immunomodulatory functions. The anti-inflammatory effects of EVs from human Adipose-derived MSCs (hADSCs) overexpressing microRNA (miR)-146a were investigated in experimental GOA in this study.

Article Synopsis
  • *Methods*: An in vitro model of inflammation was created using THP-1 cells treated with LPS, and various concentrations of TFL were tested for their non-toxic effects on these cells. ELISA and RT-PCR techniques were used to measure inflammatory markers and microRNA expressions.
  • *Findings*: The results indicated that the maximum non-toxic dose of TFL (0.04 mL/mL) effectively reduced the inflammation markers TNF-α and IL-6, and revealed the involvement of

Article Synopsis
  • The study created a rat model and a human cell model to investigate the role of microRNA-146a (miR-146a) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in orthodontic tooth movement relapse after removing orthodontic appliances.
  • In the rat experiment, samples were taken at various intervals post-appliance removal to measure changes in miR-146a and IL-6 levels, revealing a peak in IL-6 expression at day 7 post-removal while miR-146a decreased significantly.
  • The findings suggest that orthodontic intervention impacts both IL-6 and miR-146a levels, with IL-6 initially increasing and then stabilizing, while miR-146a expression decreases
