Two complexes comprising 9-coordinate capped square antiprismatic [Ln(NO)(OH)(MeOH)] units [Ln(III) = Dy 6; Tb 7] are reported in which the metal complexes are hydrogen-bonded to 15C5 (15-crown-5) macrocycles to form supramolecular chains, {[Ln(NO)(OH)(MeOH)]·(15C5)}. Alternating current magnetic susceptibility measurements supported by ab initio studies show field-induced SMM (single-molecule magnet) behavior for 6, but rapid relaxation of the magnetization for 7 because of the presence of dominant quantum tunneling processes as evidenced by the presence of a significant calculated tunnel splitting within the ground-state multiplet. Modeling the high-resolution emission spectra for 6 afforded energies of 37 ± 5 and 28 ± 5 cm for the first-excited-state Stark sublevels of the two crystallographically independent Dy1 and Dy2 ions, in excellent agreement with the calculated values of 31 and 21 cm for ΔE derived from ab initio studies.

This study investigates the surface energies and work function changes in ZnGaO(111) surfaces with different atomic terminations using ab initio density functional theory. It explores the interactions of gas molecules such as NO, NO, and CHCOCH with Ga-terminated, O-terminated, and Ga-Zn-O-terminated surfaces. This study reveals previously unreported insights into how O-terminated surfaces exhibit enhanced reactivity with NO, resulting in significant work function changes of +6.

The dissolution mechanism of YbOF in a fluoride-containing (LiF-CaF) molten salt is the basis for analyzing the structure of the resulting medium and optimizing the electrolytic preparation of rare-earth Yb alloys. In this study, isothermal saturation was used to analyze solubility changes of YbOF in the (LiF-CaF). system.

An extensive thermochemical study of γ-undecanolactone and δ-undecanolactone has been developed using two complementary calorimetric techniques. The combustion energy of each compound was determined by static-bomb combustion calorimetry, and the corresponding enthalpy of vaporization was determined by high-temperature Calvet microcalorimetry, in which both properties of each compound are reported at = 298.15 K.

To provide insight into the interface structure in Ti particle-reinforced Mg matrix composites, this study investigates the inherent Mg/Ti interface structure formed during the solidification of supercooled Mg melt on a (0001)Ti substrate using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations and density function theory (DFT) calculation. The resulting interface exhibits an orientation relationship of 0001Mg//0001Ti with a lattice mismatch of approximately 8%. Detailed characterizations reveal the occurrences of 0001Mg plane rotation and vacancy formation to overcome the lattice mismatch at the inherent Mg/Ti interface while allowing Mg atoms to occupy the energetically favorable hollow sites above the Ti atomic layer.

The ultrafast excited-state dynamics of endohedral fullerenes are crucial in their photophysical and photochemical processes when they are employed as photovoltaic devices, photocatalytic devices, and single-molecule devices. In this study, by employing the non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations based on the time-dependent Kohn-Sham (TD-KS) method, we theoretically studied the size effect on ultrafast excited-state decay dynamics of the photoexcited Be electron in endohedral fullerenes Be@C (2 = 60, 70, and 80). These excited-state decay dynamics, which involve the charge-transfer process, occur in an ultrafast time scale of about 3 ps.
