Three new bidesmosidic cholestane-type steroidal glycosides, 16-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl-cholest-5-en-3β,16β-diol-22-one-3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-O-[(β-d-glucopyranosyl(1→4)]-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (1), 16-O-β-d-glucopyranosylcholest-5-en-3β,16β-diol-22-one-3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (2), and 16-O-β-d-glucopyranosylcholestan-3β,16β-diol-6,22-dione-3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (3) were isolated from a methanolic extract of Panicum turgidum. In addition four known compounds, pennogenin 3β-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-O-[α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)]-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (4), yamogenin 3β-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-O-[α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)]-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (5), yamogenin 3β-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-O-[α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)]-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (6), and pennogenin 3β-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-O-[α-l-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→4)]-O-β-d-glucopyranoside (7) were also isolated and characterized. Their structures were established using extensive spectroscopic methods including 1D and 2D NMR and HRESIMS. The isolated compounds were screened for cytotoxicity towards a panel of mammalian cell lines and 4-7 were found to be cytotoxic.

The effects of ionizing radiation (IR) on the protein dynamics of cold-stressed cells of a radioresistant actinobacterium, Kocuria rhizophila PT10, isolated from the rhizosphere of the desert plant Panicum turgidum were investigated using a shotgun methodology based on nanoflow liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. Overall, 1487 proteins were certified, and their abundances were compared between the irradiated condition and control. IR of cold-acclimated PT10 triggered the over-abundance of proteins involved in (1) a strong transcriptional regulation, (2) amidation of peptidoglycan and preservation of cell envelope integrity, (3) detoxification of reactive electrophiles and regulation of the redox status of proteins, (4) base excision repair and prevention of mutagenesis and (5) the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle and production of fatty acids.

Applying extracts from plants is considered a safe approach in biomedicine and bio-nanotechnology. The present report is considered the first study that evaluated the seeds of Lasiurus scindicus and Panicum turgidum as biogenic agents in the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) which had bioactivity against cancer cells and bacteria. Assessment of NPs activity against varied cell lines (colorectal cancer HCT116 and breast cancer MDA MBA 231 and MCF 10A used as control) was performed beside the antibacterial efficiency.

Investigations of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) received extreme interests among scientist including agronomists and environmental scientists. This interest is linked to advantages provided by AMF in enhancing the nutrients of their hosts via improving photosynthetic pigments and antioxidant production. Further, it also positively alters the production of plant hormones.
