Background: Dermatologists were historically well versed in the use of radiation therapy for the management of non-melanoma skin cancers and various inflammatory dermatologic conditions. With the advent of Mohs micrographic surgery and therapeutic discoveries for treating inflammatory dermatoses, radiotherapy assumed loss of a role in the clinical repertoire of the dermatologist. In recent years, its importance has again been realized for the management of non-melanoma skin cancers not amenable to surgical treatment or as adjuvant or palliative therapy.

Objective: To review the evolving use of radiation therapy in the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer.

Methods and Materials: All published literature regarding the applications of radiotherapy for the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer were analyzed and collated.

Results: A comprehensive review of radiotherapy for the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer was outlined.

Conclusion: Dermatologists should be well versed in radiation therapy in order to deliver the best possible care for patients, as radiotherapy is an important adjuvant tool for the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer.

Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are chronic inflammatory conditions that constitute a significant global health burden due to their prevalence and impact on quality of life. A deeper comprehension of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis pathogenesis has recently led to the emergence of novel classes of biologics targeting the IL-23/Th17 pathway. The specific role of interleukin-12, -23, and -17 in cancer as either promoters or inhibitors is under investigation in various studies.

Recently, photodynamic therapy (PDT) which involves a photosensitizer (PS), a special drug activated by light, and light irradiation has been widely used in treating various skin diseases such as port-wine stain as well as cancers such as melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. PDT comprises two general steps: the introduction of PS into the body or a specific spot to be treated, and the irradiation process using a light source with a specific wavelength to excite the PS. Although PDT is gaining great attention owing to its potential as a targeted approach in the treatment of skin cancers, several limitations still exist for practical use.

We examined the risk of subsequent malignant neoplasms (SMNs) in 1720 patients with hematologic cancers given allogeneic hematopoietic grafts from 03/1998 to 08/2023 after nonmyeloablative conditioning regimens. With a median follow-up of 12 years, the cumulative incidence of SMNs was 17% (95% CI, [15%, 19%]). Most SMNs (n = 543) were non-melanoma skin cancers seen in 208 patients; unfortunately, information on these cancers was not available in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database for comparison with such tumors in the general population.
