Background: Uric acid is a final breakdown product of purine catabolism in humans. It's a potent antioxidant and can also act as a pro-oxidant that induces oxidative stress on the vascular endothelial cells, thus mediating progression of diabetic related diseases. Various epidemiological and experimental evidence suggest that uric acid has a role in the etiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus. We conducted a cross-sectional study to evaluate the correlation of retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) and macular thickness with serum uric acid in type 2 diabetic patients.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the Eye Clinic, Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kelantan between the period of August 2013 till July 2015 involving type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with no diabetic retinopathy and with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR). An evaluation for RNFL and macular thickness was measured using Spectralis Heidelberg optical coherence tomography. Six ml of venous blood was taken for the measurement of serum uric acid and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1).

Results: A total of 180 diabetic patients were recruited (90 patients with no diabetic retinopathy and 90 patients with NPDR) into the study. The mean level of serum uric acid for both the groups was within normal range and there was no significance difference between the two groups. Based on gender, both male and female gender showed significantly higher level of mean serum uric acid in no diabetic retinopathy group (p = 0.004 respectively). The mean serum uric acid was significantly higher in patient with HbA1 < 6.5% (p < 0.031). Patients with NPDR have thicker RNFL and macular thickness compared to patients with no diabetic retinopathy. However, only the RNFL thickness of the temporal quadrant and the macular thickness of the superior outer, inferior outer and temporal outer subfields were statistically significant (p = 0.038, p = 0.004, 0.033 and <0.001 respectively). There was poor correlation between RNFL and macular thickness with serum uric acid in both the groups.

Conclusion: Serum uric acid showed a poor correlation with RNFL and macular thickness among type 2 diabetic patients.

Analysis of the effect of platelet function and different doses of ticagrelor after flow diverter treatment of intracranial aneurysms.

Neurosurg Rev

January 2025

Neurosurgery Center, Department of Cerebrovascular Surgery, Engineering Technology Research Center of Education Ministry of China on Diagnosis and Treatment of Cerebrovascular Disease, Zhujiang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, China.

Ticagrelor has become the standard drug for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) with flow diverters (FDs), but the dosage has not been standardized. The effect of platelet function on clinical and imaging prognosis remains unclear. This study aimed to show the effects of different doses of ticagrelor and platelet aggregation function on the clinical and imaging prognosis after FDs treatment of aneurysms.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Cepharanthine (CEP) is an alkaloid extracted from Stephania cephalantha Hayata, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) renowned for its heatclearing and dehumidifying properties. For centuries, Stephania cephalantha Hayata has been employed in the treatment of a wide range of diseases, including pain, edema, inflammation, and fever.

Aim Of The Study: Our research aims to investigate the role and mechanism of Cepharanthine in ameliorating uric acid (UA) induced neuroinflammatory responses.

This study was aim to investigate the effects of lipoic acid (ALA) on performance, meat quality, serum biochemistry and antioxidant function of broilers under heat stress (HS). Two hundred1-day-old Cobb broilers were randomly divided into four treatment groups and each treatment consisted of 4 replicates of 10 broilers each. The treatment group adopts a 2 × 2 two-factor setting, which is divided into two diets (basic diet or 250 mg/kg ALA diet) and two temperatures (24 ± 1℃ or 33 ± 1℃).

This meta-analysis investigates the potential of allopurinol to prevent contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN), a common and serious complication of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). CIN is particularly prevalent among high-risk populations, including patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) or acute coronary syndrome (ACS), where the administration of contrast agents can exacerbate renal injury. Allopurinol, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, is known for its dual action in reducing oxidative stress and uric acid production, positioning it as a promising therapeutic candidate to mitigate CIN.

Chemical polymerization/oligomerization opens numerous opportunities, from fundamental materials research to practical applications in catalysis, energy, sensing, and medicine. The electrochemical detection of vitamins B (folic acid) and C (ascorbic acid) requires new approaches because of low selectivity, electrode fouling, and interference from other chemicals. As an excellent material for long-term vitamin detection, oligo 3,5-diamino-1,2,4-triazole (oligo DAT) enhances the sensitivity, selectivity, and stability of sensors by creating a stable, conductive layer that facilitates electron transfer and reduces interference from common substances like glucose or uric acid.
