Two-piece implant systems are mainly used in oral implantology involving an osseointegrated implant connected to an abutment, which supports prosthetic structures. It is well documented that the presence of microgaps, biofilms and oral fluids at the implant-abutment connection can cause mechanical and biological complications. The aim of this review paper was to report the degradation at the implant-abutment connection by wear and corrosion processes taking place in the oral cavity. Most of the retrieved studies evaluated the wear and corrosion (tribocorrosion) of titanium-based materials used for implants and abutments in artificial saliva. Electrochemical and wear tests together with microscopic techniques were applied to validate the tribocorrosion behavior of the surfaces. A few studies inspected the wear on the inner surfaces of the implant connection as a result of fatigue or removal of abutments. The studies reported increased microgaps after fatigue tests. In addition, data suggest that micromovements occurring at the contacting surfaces can increase the wear of the inner surfaces of the connection. Biofilms and/or glycoproteins act as lubricants, although they can also amplify the corrosion of the surfaces. Consequently, loosening of the implant-abutment connection can take place during mastication. In addition, wear and corrosion debris such as ions and micro- and nanoparticles released into the surrounding tissues can stimulate peri-implant inflammation that can lead to pathologic bone resorption.

Objectives: This study aimed to assess the vertical misfit at the implant-abutment interface in external and internal connections across various implant brands, comparing original milled titanium abutments with laser-sintered cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) abutments.
Materials And Methods: A total of 160 implants from four different brands were utilized, with 80 featuring external connections (EC) and 80 internal connections (IC). Original milled titanium abutments (n = 160) and Co-Cr laser-sintered abutments (n = 160) were randomly attached to each connection type, following the manufacturer's recommended torque.

Objectives: A new abutment-free implant connection allows for direct screwing of FDPs on implants to avoid complications caused by cement rests or screw loosening, which may affect to screw torque and load distribution. The objective of this study was to test the initial (Fi) and final failure (Ff) loads and torque changes of abutment-free monolithic zirconia CAD-CAM fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) compared to titanium FDPs on different abutment designs.
Methods: Three-unit screw-retained FDPs (n = 50) on two implants (n = 100) were divided into groups (n = 10) based on the implant-abutment connection and material of the supra-structure: (1) abutment-free monolithic CAD-CAM zirconia FDP (Abut-free-Zr), (2) abutment-free veneered titanium FDPs (Abut-free-Ti), (3) monolithic zirconia FDPs with titanium base abutments (Zr-Ti-Base), (4) monolithic zirconia FDPs on multi-unit abutments (Zr-MU), (5) veneered titanium FDP on multi-unit abutments (Ti-MU).

Metal 3D printing has been used in the manufacturing of dental implants. Its technical advantages include high material utilization and the capacity to form arbitrarily complex structures. However, 3D printing alone is insufficient for manufacturing two-stage titanium implants due to the limited precision in printing titanium alloy parts.

Purpose: to quantify the soft tissue dimensional changes after single-gap implant placement, during healing abutment and crown delivery phase for butt-joint and conical implant-abutment connection type.
Methods: forty patients were enrolled in the study and received randomly allocated implants with butt-joint and conical implant-abutment connection type. A standard healing abutment was placed after 6 months for two weeks.
