Novel clinical treatments to target peripheral nerves are being developed which primarily use electrical current. Recently, infrared (IR) light was shown to inhibit peripheral nerves with high spatial and temporal specificity. Here, for the first time, we demonstrate that IR can selectively and reversibly inhibit small-diameter axons at lower radiant exposures than large-diameter axons. We provide a mathematical rationale, and then demonstrate it experimentally in individual axons of identified neurons in the marine mollusk Aplysia californica, and in axons within the vagus nerve of a mammal, the musk shrew Suncus murinus. The ability to selectively, rapidly, and reversibly control small-diameter sensory fibers may have many applications, both for the analysis of physiology, and for treating diseases of the peripheral nervous system, such as chronic nausea, vomiting, pain, and hypertension. Moreover, the mathematical analysis of how IR affects the nerve could apply to other techniques for controlling peripheral nerve signaling.

The corpus callosum (CC) is the most important interhemispheric white matter (WM) structure composed of several anatomically and functionally distinct WM tracts. Resolving these tracts is a challenge since the callosum appears relatively homogenous in conventional structural imaging. Commonly used callosal parcellation methods such as Hofer and Frahm scheme rely on rigid geometric guidelines to separate the substructures that are limited to consider individual variation.

Primary (AL) systemic amyloidosis is an uncommon disorder in which immunoglobulin light chains are deposited in the tissues as amyloid, resulting in organ dysfunction. The initial symptoms are frequent fatigue and weight loss, and common manifestations include nephrotic syndrome, cardiomyopathy, peripheral neuropathy or hepatomegaly. Histological examination reveals some degree of amyloid deposition in virtually every organ system except the central nervous system (CNS).

Background: We examined de-functionalization and temporal functional recovery of C-nociceptor evoked pain after topical 8% capsaicin applied for 4 consecutive days.

Methods: Capsaicin and placebo patches were applied to human forearm skin (n = 14). Cold, warmth and heat pain thresholds, pain NRS to electrical and thermal (48°C, 5 s) stimuli and axon reflex flare were recorded weekly for 49 days.

Objectives: Pharmacologic pain treatments lack specific targeting and often produce unwanted side effects (eg, addiction, additional hyperalgesia). We previously established that the direct application of laser irradiation (direct photobiomodulation [PBM]) of the sural nerve reduces thermal hypersensitivity in a rodent model of chronic pain, but not mechanical hypersensitivity. These observations were consistent with a selective reduction in the small-diameter fiber contribution to electrophysiologically measured evoked response after direct PBM of a sensory nerve (saphenous).
