Two series of mixtures of ethylammoniumbutanoate (EAB, [N][CCO]) in water and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) have been prepared at different molar fractions to assess the effect of these two polar solvents on the nanostructural order present in [N][CCO]. The small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS) pattern of the liquid in neat state shows a prepeak at Q = 0.513 Å, which is associated with the aggregation of nonpolar alkyl chains of both cations and anions. Interestingly, the two solvents affect the nanostructure of [N][CCO] differently, though both are polar. In the case of water addition to the mixture, the prepeak shifts to lower Q values, while in NMP, it moves toward higher values. Also, the principal peaks move in opposite direction in both solvents. The underlying expansion (water) or contraction (NMP) of the solutions observed by the scattering experiments is discussed in terms of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, which are in very good agreement with the observed patterns.

A Convenient and Highly Efficient Strategy for Esterification of Poly (γ-Glutamic Acid) with Alkyl Halides at Room Temperature.

Polymers (Basel)

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Biocatalysis and Enzyme Engineering, Environmental Microbial Technology Center of Hubei Province, College of Life Sciences, Hubei University, Wuhan 430062, China.

The presented work discusses the highly efficient esterification of poly (γ-glutamic acid) (γ-PGA) with alkyl halides at room temperature. The esterification reaction was completed within 3 h, and the prepared γ-PGA esters were obtained with excellent yields (98.6%) when 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMG) was used as a promoter.

Leveraging Multivalent Assembly towards High-Temperature Liquid-Phase Phosphorescence.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Advanced Marine Materials, Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ningbo, 315201, P. R. China.

High-temperature phosphorescence (HTP) materials have attracted considerable attention owing to their expanded application prospects, whereas they still suffer from severe deactivation in polar media, limiting their reliability and utility. Here, we present an efficient multivalent assembly strategy to achieve high-temperature liquid-phase phosphorescence (HTLP). The supramolecular assembly of multivalent modules leads to extremely robust hydrogen-bonding networks, which firmly immobilize the organic phosphors and protect triplet excitons from annihilation in high-temperature polar media, resulting in excellent HTLP emission.

Ketamine HCl, an FDA-approved therapeutic, is administered through various routes, including intranasal delivery. Administering an adequate therapeutic dose of intranasal ketamine HCl is challenging due to the limited volume that can be delivered intranasally given the current commercially available concentrations. This study investigates solubilizing strategies to enhance the aqueous solubility of ketamine HCl for intranasal administration.

The scope of this work was to develop a thin-film composite (TFC) membrane for the separation of CO/CO mixtures, which are relevant for many processes of gas processing and gasification of carbon-based feedstock. Special attention was given to the development of highly permeable porous polysulfone (PSF) supports (more than 26,000 GPU for CO) since both the selective and support layers contribute significantly to the overall performance of the TFC membrane. The PSF porous support is widely used in commercial and lab-scale TFC membranes, and its porous structure and other exploitation parameters are set during the non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) process.

This study focuses on the fabrication and characterisation of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) buckypapers and polyethersulfone (PES) flat-sheet membranes using Cyrene, aiming toevaluate its efficacy as a green solvent for these applications. Pristine SWCNTs were dispersed inCyrene without surfactants and compared to N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) dispersions. Buckypapers were fabricated from these dispersions and characterised using Scanning ElectronMicroscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and infrared spectroscopy.
