Triple synchronous primary malignancies: a rare occurrence.

Published: June 2017

Triple synchronous primary malignant neoplasms are rare. The exact aetiology is unknown; however, risk factors include older age, family history, genetic aberrations, prolonged exposure to carcinogens and smoking. We describe a previously healthy 48-year-old woman who presented with abdominal pain and a palpable abdominal mass. Imaging revealed a complex cystic, solid pelvic mass and another mass in the right upper quadrant. She received an extensive abdominal surgery including exploratory laparotomy, pelvic mass resection, total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy, omentectomy and right adrenalectomy. During surgery, a mass in the distal sigmoid colon was noted and subsequent sigmoidectomy was performed. The surgical specimen revealed three different primary tumours with three different histologies, a granulosa cell tumour of the ovary, adrenocortical carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the colon. She received six cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy for colon cancer with 5-fluorourocil, leucovorin and oxaliplatin and is currently living with no recurrence.

Helical Assemblies of Colloidal Nanocrystals with Long-Range Order and Their Fusion into Continuous Structures.

Chirality epitomizes the sophistication of chemistry, representing some of its most remarkable achievements. Yet, the precise synthesis of chiral structures from achiral building blocks remains a profound and enduring challenge in synthetic chemistry and materials science. Here, we demonstrate that achiral colloidal nanocrystals, including Au and Ag nanocrystals, can assemble into long-range-ordered helical assemblies with the assistance of chiral molecules.

Enhancement of quantum synchronization in triple-cavity system.

Sci Rep

School of Physics and Optoelectronics, Xiangtan University, Xiangtan, 411105, China.

We introduce two strategies to enhance quantum synchronization within a triple-cavity optomechanical system, where each cavity contains an oscillator and is interconnected via optical fibers. Our results demonstrate that applying appropriate periodic modulation to the driving fields or the cavity modes can ensure robust quantum synchronization across both open and closed configurations. This approach offers promising avenues for expanding quantum synchronization capabilities in multi-cavity systems and has significant implications for advancing quantum synchronization generation and application in complex networks.

Hafnium (Hf)-based nanoscale metal-organic layers (MOLs) enhance radiotherapeutic effects of tissue-penetrating X-rays via a unique radiotherapy-radiodynamic therapy (RT-RDT) process through efficient generation of hydroxy radical (RT) and singlet oxygen (RDT). However, their radiotherapeutic efficacy is limited by hypoxia in deep-seated tumors and short half-lives of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Herein the conjugation of a nitric oxide (NO) donor, S-nitroso-N-acetyl-DL-penicillamine (SNAP), to the Hf secondary building units (SBUs) of Hf-5,5'-di-p-benzoatoporphyrin MOL is reported to afford SNAP/MOL for enhanced cancer radiotherapy.

Personalized Multi-Epitope Nanovaccine Unlocks B Cell-Mediated Multiple Pathways of Antitumor Immunity.

Adv Mater

State Key Laboratory of Drug Research & Center of Pharmaceutics, Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Shanghai, 201203, China.

B lymphocytes have emerged as an important immune-regulating target. Inoculation with tumor cell membrane-derived vaccines is a promising strategy to activate B cells, yet their efficiency is limited due to lack of costimulatory molecules. To amplify B cell responses against tumor, herein, a spatiotemporally-synchronized antigen-adjuvant integrated nanovaccine, termed as CM-CpG-aCD40, is constructed by conjugating the immune stimulative CpG oligonucleotide and the anti-CD40 antibody (aCD40) onto the membrane vesicles derived from triple negative breast cancer cells.

Synchronized Contrast-Enhanced 4DCT Simulation for Target Volume Delineation in Abdominal SBRT.

Cancers (Basel)

Medical Physics Department, Fondazione IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori, 20900 Monza, Italy.

To present the technical aspects of contrast-enhanced 4DCT (ce4DCT) simulation for abdominal SBRT. Twenty-two patients underwent two sequential 4DCT scans: one baseline and one contrast-enhanced with personalized delay time () calculated to capture the tumor in the desired contrast phase, based on diagnostic triple-phase CT. The internal target volume (ITV) was delineated on ten contrast phases, and a panel of three experts qualitatively evaluated tumor visibility.
