Transcatheter left atrial appendage closure for stroke prevention with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation is an emerging alternative to oral anticoagulation. Several devices and approaches have been developed to achieve optimal closure. This article describes in detail the key procedural steps and the tips and tricks required to succeed in this transcatheter technique. The 4 devices covered are the WATCHMAN, AMPLATZER Cardiac Plug, Coherex WaveCrest generation 1.3, and the LARIAT suture delivery device.

Background: Prone transpsoas lumbar interbody fusion (PTP) is a newer technique to treat various spinal disc pathologies. PTP is a variation of lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) that is performed with the patient prone rather than in the lateral decubitus position. This approach offers similar benefits of lateral spinal surgery, which include less blood loss, shorter hospital stay, and quicker recovery compared with traditional open spine surgery.

Background: The rarity that is inherent in rare disease (RD) often means that patients and parents of children with RDs feel uniquely isolated and therefore are unprepared or unsupported in their care. To overcome this isolation, many within the RD community turn to the internet, and social media groups in particular, to gather useful information about their RDs.
