Nine new phenalenone derivatives (1-9), along with two known analogues (10-11) have been isolated from the solid cultures of an endophytic fungus Aspergillus sp. which was obtained from Pinellia ternate. Their structures were established through interpretations of spectroscopic evidence, and some of their absolute configurations were determined by electronic circular dichroism (ECD) and Mo(OCOCH) induced ECD. All of the phenalenones are unusual acyclic diterpenoid adducts, which are diversely oxidized and partly epoxidized to form different heterocycles. In addition, compound 10 exhibited significant antimicrobial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis with MIC values of 1.87, 2.77, and 4.80μg/mL, respectively.

Seven new nitrogen-containing heptacyclic oligophenalenone dimers, talauromides A-G (-), together with known compounds bacillisporins A and B ( and ), talaromycesones C and B ( and ), duclauxin () and lamellicolic anhydride (), were isolated from the soil derived-fungus BMC-16. Their chemical structures were determined based on spectroscopic analysis data. The absolute configurations were elucidated by chemical approaches and the comparison of CD spectra with related compounds.

The synthesis of amides holds great promise owing to their impeccable contributions as building blocks for highly valued functional derivatives. Herein, we disclose the design, synthesis and crystal structure of a mixed-ligand ruthenium(II) complex, [Ru(η-Cym)(O,O-PLY)Cl], (1) where Cym = 1-isopropyl-4-methyl-benzene and O,O-PLY = deprotonated form of 9-hydroxy phenalenone (HO,O-PLY). The complex catalyzes the aerobic oxidation of various primary amines (RCHNH) to value-added amides (RCONH) with excellent selectivity and efficiency under relatively mild conditions with common organic functional group tolerance.

The Fusarium solani species complex (FSSC) is comprised of important pathogens of plants and humans. A distinctive feature of FSSC species is perithecial pigmentation. While the dark perithecial pigments of other Fusarium species are derived from fusarubins synthesized by polyketide synthase 3 (PKS3), the perithecial pigments of FSSC are derived from an unknown metabolite synthesized by PKS35.

The sustainable chemical energy of HO as a fuel and an oxidant in an advantageous single-compartment fuel cell design can be converted into electric energy, which requires molecular engineering to design suitable cathodes for lowering the high overpotential associated with HO reduction. The present work covers the synthesis and structural characterization of a novel cathode material, [FeIII2(hnmh-PLY)] complex, 1, designed from a PLY-derived Schiff base ligand ()-9-(2-((2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)methylene)hydrazineyl)-1-phenalen-1-one, hnmh-PLYH. Complex 1, when coated on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GC-1) significantly catalyzed the reduction of HO in an acidic medium.

Natural product discovery is hindered by the lack of tools that integrate untargeted nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectrometry data on a library scale. This article describes the first application of the innovative NMR/MS-based machine learning tool, the "Structure-Oriented Fractions Screening Platform (SFSP)", enabling functional-group-guided fractionation and accelerating the discovery and characterization of undescribed natural products. The concept was applied to the extract of a marine fungus known to be a prolific producer of diverse natural products.
