Introduction: Oxidative stress contributes to delayed graft function (DGF). Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are polymorphic genes which produce enzymes with protective effect against oxidative stress. This study aimed to investigate the association between donors' and recipients' GSTM1 and GSTT1 polymorphisms and DGF, creatinine clearance, and oxidative stress parameters in kidney allograft recipients.
Materials And Methods: One hundred and eighty-two donor-recipient pairs were studied. Lipid peroxidation and total antioxidant capacity were measured in the recipients' plasma as the parameters of oxidative stress. Delayed graft function was determined based on at least 10% increase, no change, or less than 10% decrease in the serum creatinine level in 3 consecutive days during the 1st week after transplantation.
Results: Lipid peroxidation was significantly greater in the recipients with DGF (P < .001). The frequency of GSTM1 null was significantly higher in the patients with DGF (odds ratio [OR], 0.38; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.17 to 0.86; P = .02). There was also a significant association between the donors' GSTM1 polymorphism and DGF (OR, 0.31; 95% CI, 0.14 to 0.68; P = .003). A significant association was detected between combination of recipients and donors' GSTM1 polymorphism and DGF (OR, 0.20; 95% CI, 0.07 to 0.64, P = .006). The recipients' GSTM1 polymorphism, alone and in combination with donors' GSTM1 and GSTT1, significantly affected the creatinine clearance on discharge day.
Conclusions: These results suggest that the donors and recipients' GSTM1 polymorphism may be a major risk factor for oxidative stress and poor kidney allograft transplantation outcomes.

Microplastics (MPs) are known as substantial environmental and health threats because of their pervasive existence and potential function in human diseases. This study is the first research in which a comprehensive analysis of various impacts of MPs on cancer cells is performed through pharmacological and in silico approaches. Moreover, our results demonstrate that MPs have both promotive and suppressive impacts on cancer cells, changing some of the important features of these kinds of cells including cellular viability, migration, metastasis, and apoptosis.

Translation initiation, which involves numerous protein factors and coordinated control steps, represents the most complicated process during eukaryotic translation. However, the roles of eukaryotic translation initiation factor (eIF) in filamentous fungi are not well clarified. In this study, we investigated the function of eIF2Bα in Aspergillus oryzae, an industrially important filamentous fungus.

Exposure to vanadium (V) occurs through the ingestion of contaminated water, polluted soil, V-containing foods and medications, and the toxicity and absorption during the small intestine phase after oral ingestion play crucial roles in the ultimate health hazards posed by V. In this study, the human colon adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) cells were selected as an intestinal absorption model to investigate the uptake and cytotoxicity of vanadyl sulfate (VOSO) and sodium orthovanadate (NaVO). Our results confirmed the cytotoxic effects of V(IV) and V(V) and revealed a greater toxicity of V(IV) than V(V) towards Caco-2 cells.

The study aimed to elucidate the underlying pharmacological mechanism of the traditional Chinese medicine Pue in ameliorating myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI), a critical clinical challenge exacerbated by reperfusion therapy. In vivo MIRI and in vitro anoxia/reoxygenation (A/R) models were constructed. The results demonstrated that Pue pretreatment effectively alleviated MIRI, as manifested by diminishing the levels of serum CK-MB and LDH, mitigating the extent of myocardial infarction and enhancing cardiac functionality.

Loss-of-function mutations in PARK7, encoding for DJ-1, can lead to early onset Parkinson's disease (PD). In mice, Park7 deletion leads to dopaminergic deficits during aging, and increased sensitivity to oxidative stress. However, the severity of the reported phenotypes varies.
