Ultrasensitive flexible sensors with multi-sensing functions are required for various applications in flexible electronics era. Here we demonstrate flexible polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC)-integrated-organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) (PDLC-i-OFETs), which sensitively respond to various stimulations including weak gas (air) flow, direct physical touch, light, and heat. The flexible PDLC-i-OFETs were fabricated by spin-coating the poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-dispersed 4,4'-pentyl-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) layers on the poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) channel layers of OFETs with 200 μm-thick poly(ethylene naphthalate) (PEN) substrates. The flexible PDLC-i-OFET devices could sense very weak nitrogen gas flow (0.3 sccm), which cannot be felt by human skins, and stably responded to direct physical touches (0.6~4.8 g load). In addition, the present devices showed very sensitive photoresponses to a visible light and exhibited excellent heat-sensing characteristics at a temperature of 25~70 °C. In particular, the present flexible PDLC-i-OFET devices could sense two different stimulations at the same time, indicative of promising multi-sensing capabilities.

To advance the industrialization of flexible strain sensors, an innovative flexible sensing fiber was developed through a sophisticated wet spinning process. Silver trifluoroacetate (C2AgF3O2) and graphene oxide (GO) were combined with thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) to prepare the fibers via wet spinning. Ascorbic acid (L-AA) was used to in situ reduce the silver trifluoroacetate and graphene oxide within the polyurethane, causing the growth of silver nanoparticles to bond with reduced graphene oxide, forming a dual conductive pathway.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA wavelength demodulation method for ultra-short fiber Bragg grating (US-FBG) sensors based on an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and a convex optimization algorithm is proposed and demonstrated. Instead of measuring the output power ratio of the two adjacent AWG channels as previously done, in this work the wavelength demodulation is realized by reconstructing the US-FBG spectrum. The principle of spectral reconstruction involves using an AWG to sample the spectral information of US-FBG and constructing underdetermined matrix equations with the obtained prior information on transmission responses and the detected output power from multiple AWG channels.

The conductive polymeric electrodes using 3D printing are an innovative material development with the advantage of the flexibility of integrating isolated polymers with a higher electrical conductivity of carbon-based materials, generating new possibilities in environmental, healthcare, and food monitoring. Based on the morphology, geometric arrangement, and dielectric properties of the composites, the performance of the electrodes is improved. Structural designs are optimized to enhance functionalities such as adhesion, catalytic activity, and the reduction of interface energy.
