The tremendous diversity of species in ecological communities has motivated a century of research into the mechanisms that maintain biodiversity. However, much of this work examines the coexistence of just pairs of competitors. This approach ignores those mechanisms of coexistence that emerge only in diverse competitive networks. Despite the potential for these mechanisms to create conditions under which the loss of one competitor triggers the loss of others, we lack the knowledge needed to judge their importance for coexistence in nature. Progress requires borrowing insight from the study of multitrophic interaction networks, and coupling empirical data to models of competition.

Background: Paramedics in Australia present as the opportune medical personnel to initiate medical intervention of seizure presentations and perform a fundamental role in the prevention of seizure associated morbidity and mortality. Despite being well equipped to manage seizures, no literature exists regarding their confidence to recognise, differentiate, or manage seizures.
Methods: An online cross-sectional survey was undertaken by 168 paramedics practicing clinically for the Queensland Ambulance Service in Australia.
Keystone engineers profoundly influence microbial communities by altering their shared environment, often by modifying key resources. Here, we show that in an antibiotic-treated microbial community, bacterial spread is controlled by keystone engineering affecting dispersal- an effect hidden in well-mixed environments. Focusing on two pathogens, non-motile Klebsiella pneumoniae and motile Pseudomonas aeruginosa, we found that both tolerate a β-lactam antibiotic, with Pseudomonas being more resilient and dominating in well-mixed cultures.

Background: The potential pairwise connections among high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), striatum-based circuits, and anhedonia in adolescent depression are not clear. This study aimed to explore whether hs-CRP levels in adolescents with depression influence anhedonia via alterations of striatum-based functional connectivity (FC).
Methods: A total of 201 adolescents (92 with depressive episodes with anhedonia (anDE), 58 with DE without anhedonia (non-anDE), and 51 healthy controls (HCs)) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and completed the anhedonia subscale of the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI).

Objective: This study explores the role of MALAT1 as a valuable target for creating minimally-invasive diagnostic methods and personalized treatments in the management of OSCC. It focuses on evaluating the role of exosomal MALAT1 in the progression of dysplasia to OSCC by influencing the PI3K/AKT pathway.
Method: This cross-sectional study evaluated MALAT1 expression and PI3K/AKT pathway components in exosomes derived from plasma samples of patients with various stages of oral dysplasia, OSCC and compared with normal.

We introduce a novel neuromorphic network architecture based on a lattice of exciton-polariton condensates, intricately interconnected and energized through nonresonant optical pumping. The network employs a binary framework, where each neuron, facilitated by the spatial coherence of pairwise coupled condensates, performs binary operations. This coherence, emerging from the ballistic propagation of polaritons, ensures efficient, network-wide communication.
