Two sympatric, distantly related Drosophila species, D. affinis and D. melanogaster, interact sexually in the laboratory and in the field. When mature males from one species are tested with females or sexually attractive males from the other species, the mature males perform courtship that, in most cases, is indistinguishable from the courtship that attractive conspecific flies elicit. Moreover, some of the D. affinis females that elicit courtship from D. melanogaster males copulate with them.

Pleiotropy, where a single gene affects multiple traits, arises through selection for novel traits and is expected to be removed from the genome through subfunctionalization following duplication events. Throughout metazoa, germ cells assemble RNA-protein organelles (germ granules). In Drosophila ovaries, perinuclear nuage forms in the nurse cells, while compositionally similar polar granules form in the oocyte. Our understanding of the molecular pathways that regulate oogenesis and define cellular identity in the Arthropod female reproductive system and the extent of their conservation is currently very limited. This is due to the focus on model systems, including Drosophila and Daphnia, which do not reflect the observed diversity of morphologies, reproductive modes, and sex chromosome systems.
