Specific ion effects (SIEs) are known to influence the acid/base behavior of silica and the interfacial structure of water, yet evidence of the effect of pH on SIEs is lacking. Here broadband vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy was used to study SIEs on the water structure at the electrical double layer (EDL) of silica as a function of pH and monovalent cation identity from pH 2-12 at 0.5 M salt concentration. SFG results indicate a direct Hofmeister series of cation adsorption at pH 8 (Li < Na < K < Cs), with an inversion in this series occurring at pH > 10. In addition, an inversion in SFG intensity trends also occurred at pH < 6, which was attributed to contributions from asymmetric cation hydration and EDL overcharging. The highly pH-dependent SIEs for silica/water have implications for EDL models that often assume pH-independent parameters.

Desiccation tolerance is a complex phenomenon observed in the lichen Flavoparmelia ceparata. To understand the reactivation process of desiccated thalli, completely dried samples were rehydrated. The rehydration process of this lichen occurs in two phases.

Coal gangue (CG) is an industrial solid waste produced by coal mining and separation that is considered to have a significant effect on the soil or water environment when exposed to the air, exacerbating ecological pollution. The comprehensive utilization of CG has always been a difficult problem due to the complex mineralogical characteristics. Producing concrete aggregates with CG is an effective strategy for utilising CG resources synthetically.

The industrial sector faces a significant challenge in finding the highly effective and efficient treatments for harmful dye-based color effluents. In this study, pure and cobalt doped barium hexaferrite of chemical formula, BaCoFeO (x = 0-0.06) are made via sol-gel auto-combustion (SC) methodology.

Compared with simple formations, EPB (earth pressure balance) shield tunnelling in composite formations encounters severe problems with muck conditioning and require improved muck conditioning technology to fulfil expectations for continuous and efficient excavation. In the Nanchang Metro Line 4 Project, a water-rich sand-argillaceous siltstone composite formation is encountered. With a high moisture content and complex composite formation ratio, it is quite difficult to determine the optimum muck conditioning scheme, and thus, muck spewing accidents frequently occur during the tunnelling process.

Planting structure adjustment (PSA) affects agricultural water saving, and is an essential part of water-saving agricultural construction. This study introduced virtual water theory and innovatively constructed a model to assess the water-saving effects of PSA in Shiyang River Basin over the past 38 years, explore the relationship between planting structure and water saving, and clarify the most water-saving planting structure. The results showed that the sown area of economic crops consistently increased as food crop areas decreased in the four counties (districts) from 1980 to 2017.
