Non-thermal helium atmospheric pressure plasma jet treatment is applied to the surface activation of porous TiO nanoparticle assemblies. Treatment conditions such as the working distance of the plasma discharge, helium gas flow rate, and treatment time are optimized for effective removal of contaminants from the assembly surface. Laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LDI-TOF MS) is applied to detect trace amounts of contaminants on assembly surfaces. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations confirm that the nanoparticle assemblies retain their original perfect spherical structures as well as their ultra-fine convex-concave nano-surfaces even after the plasma jet treatment. N adsorption/desorption and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements show no significant changes in their BET specific surface areas and crystal structures, respectively. The plasma jet-treated TiO nanoparticle assemblies show a 3.8 fold improvement in their reaction rate constants for methylene blue degradation and a 2 fold enhancement of their photocurrents under UV irradiation when compared with untreated TiO.

In the subauroral zone at the boundary of the auroral oval in the evening and night hours during geomagnetic disturbances, a narrow (about 1°-2°) and extended structure (several hours in longitude) is formed. It is known as a polarization jet (PJ) or the subauroral ion drift (SAID). The PJ/SAID is a fast westward ion drift and is one of the main signatures of a geomagnetic disturbance in the subauroral ionosphere at the altitudes of the F-layer, when the geomagnetic AE index reaches more than 500 nT.

The Voyager 2 flyby of Uranus in 1986 revealed an unusually oblique and off-centred magnetic field. This single in situ measurement has been the basis of our interpretation of Uranus's magnetosphere as the canonical extreme magnetosphere of the solar system; with inexplicably intense electron radiation belts and a severely plasma-depleted magnetosphere. However, the role of external forcing by the solar wind has rarely been considered in explaining these observations.

Inductively coupled plasma (ICP), a non-contact optical processing method, has been widely used in the preparation of fused quartz. However, the thermal effect during processing inevitably affects the stability of the removal rate, reduces the processing accuracy, and restricts the further development of plasma processing. This paper analyzes the critical temperature that affects the changes in plasma removal depth, establishes a heat transfer model for plasma jet processing through simulations, derives the heat conduction equation during processing, and obtains the critical radius corresponding to the critical temperature related to the processing speed.

Background/objectives: Despite the numerous advances in glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) treatment, GBM remains as the most malignant and aggressive form of brain cancer, characterized by a very poor outcome, highlighting the ongoing need for the development of new therapeutic strategies. A novel intervention using plasma-assisted local delivery of oncology drugs was developed to mediate the drug delivery, which might improve drug uptake and/or chemotherapeutic action. Topotecan (TPT), a water-soluble topoisomerase I inhibitor with major cytotoxic effects during the S-phase of the cell cycle, was selected as the candidate drug because despite its potent antitumor activity, the systemic administration to the brain is limited due to low crossing of the blood-brain barrier.
