Global hunger has increased recently, returning to levels observed a decade ago. Climate change is identified as a key factor contributing to these increases and is a significant cause of severe food crises. When combined with population growth and globalization, future climate variability is expected to significantly affect global food security.

How might one embed a chemist's knowledge into an automated materials-discovery pipeline? In generative design for inorganic crystalline materials, generating candidate compounds is no longer a bottleneck - there are now synthetic datasets of millions of compounds. However, weeding out unsynthesizable or difficult to synthesize compounds remains an outstanding challenge. Post-generation "filters" have been proposed as a means of embedding human domain knowledge, either in the form of scientific laws or rules of thumb.

Understanding the proximate and ultimate causes of phenotypic variation is fundamental in evolutionary research, as such variation provides the substrate for selection to act upon. Although trait variation can arise due to selection, the importance of neutral processes is sometimes understudied. We presented the first reference-quality genome of the Red Diamond Rattlesnake (Crotalus ruber) and used range-wide 'omic data to estimate the degree to which neutral and adaptive evolutionary processes shaped venom evolution.

The integration of postmodern thinking in the sciences, especially in biology, has been subject to harsh criticism. Contrary to Enlightenment ideals of objectivity and neutrality in the scientific method, the postmodern stance holds that truth is relative, not universal, and therefore progress is ambiguous. The effect of postmodern thought has ramifications that extend from the distrust of preexisting scientific conclusions to questions about the impact of progress in society.

AbstractLocal adaptation frequently evolves in patches or environments that are connected via migration. In these cases, genomic regions that are linked to a locally adapted locus experience reduced effective migration rates. Via individual-based simulations of a two-patch system, we show that this reduced effective migration results in the accumulation of conditionally deleterious mutations, but not universally deleterious mutations, adjacent to adaptive loci.
