Serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)] is an important neuromodulator involved in a wide range of physiological functions. The effects of serotonin are mediated by an extended family of receptors coupled to multiple heterotrimeric G-proteins, associated with cellular membrane. G proteins connect receptors to effectors and thus trigger intracellular signaling pathways. These cellular processes several regulate systemic functions such as embryonic development, gonadal development, learning and memory, and organismal homeostasis. Generally, elasmobranch fish dwell a hypersaline environment and utilize a specialized extrarenal salt secreting organ, the rectal gland, to face ionic homeostasis. In this study in addition to the morphological, histochemical and immunohistochemical description of the Scyliorhinus canicula rectal gland, for the first time, the presence of serotonin (5-HT), and distribution of different types of G protein alpha subunits (Gα o, Gα q/11, and Gα s/olf) has been investigated in the rectal gland epithelium by confocal immunofluorescence techniques. Colocalization G proteins and 5-HT in the secretory epithelium of the gland suggests serotonin acts as a hormone and involves G proteins in an autocrine-paracrine control of rectal gland homeostasis.

Although the most common cause of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) worldwide is 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21OHD), which accounts for more than 95% of cases, other rare causes of CAH such as 11 beta-hydroxylase deficiency (11βOHD), 3 beta-hydroxy steroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) deficiency, 17 hydroxylase deficiency and lipoid CAH may also be encountered in clinical practice. 11βOHD is the most common type of CAH after 21OHD, and CYP11B1 deficiency in adrenal steroidogenesis causes the inability to produce cortisol and aldosterone and the excessive production of adrenal androgens. Although the clinical and laboratory features are similar to 21OHD, findings of mineralocorticoid deficiency are not observed.

Background: Mangrove plants growing in the high salt environment of coastal intertidal zones colonize a variety of microorganisms in the phyllosphere, which have potential salt-tolerant and growth-promoting effects. However, the characteristics of microbial communities in the phyllosphere of mangrove species with and without salt glands and the differences between them remain unknown, and the exploration and the agricultural utilization of functional microbial resources from the leaves of mangrove plants are insufficient.
Results: In this study, we examined six typical mangrove species to unravel the differences in the diversity and structure of phyllosphere microbial communities between mangrove species with or without salt glands.
Background: Adaptive radiotherapy (ART) involves the continuous adaptation of the radiation plan according to patient- and tumor-specific feedback. In online ART, the plan is optimized in real time during the treatment; in offline ART, the plan is recalculated between treatment sessions. Hybrid linear accelerators with integrated CT, MRI, or PET are required to perform online ART.

The increase in ambient temperature is responsible for a behavioral, physiological and metabolic responses known as heat stress, which affects dairy cows' general well-being, health, reproduction, and productivity. Focusing on the functioning of the mammary gland, attention has been recently paid to a new method of cell-cell communication mediated by extracellular vesicles, which with their cargo can affect the target cells' phenotypic traits, behavior, and biological functions. This study investigated whether the small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) isolated from milk of heat-stressed Holstein Friesian (H) and Brown Swiss (B) cows affect the cellular response of a bovine mammary epithelial cell line (BME-UV1).

Colorectal cancer ideally spreads via the haematogenous or lymphatic route with the most common metastasis to the liver or lungs. Metastasis of this cancer to the parotid gland has not been previously reported. This paper presents a case of rectal adenocarcinoma in a 34-year-old Pakistani male, who presented with histopathological evidence of metastasis in the parotid gland within one year of treatment.
